VI. Reading comprehension (阅读理解): (共50分)
A. Choose the best answer(根据短文内容,选择最恰当的答案): ( 12分)
One day, when I was a librarian at View Ridge School, a fourth grade teacher came to me. She had a student who finished his work before all the others and needed a challenge. “Could he help in the library?” she asked. I said, “Send him along.”
Soon a boy in jeans and a T-shirt appeared. “Do you have a job for me?” he asked.
I told him about the system for putting books on the shelves. He picked up the idea immediately. Then I showed him a pile of cards for long-overdue(过期的)books that I was beginning to think had actually been returned but were mis-shelved with the wrong cards in them. He said, “Is it kind of a detective job?” I answered yes, and he began his work.
He had found three books with wrong cards by the time his teacher opened the door and said, “Time for rest!” He argued for finishing the job; she made the case for fresh air. She won. The next morning, he arrived early. “I wanted to finish finding those books,” he said. At the end of the day, when he asked to be a librarian on a regular basis, it was easy to say yes. He worked hard.
After a few weeks I found a note on my desk, inviting me to dinner at the boy’s home. At the end of a pleasant evening, his mother said that the family would be moving to the nearby school area. Her son’s first worry, she said, was leaving the View Ridge library. “Who will find the lost books?” he asked.
When the time came, I said a reluctant goodbye. Though at first he had seemed an ordinary kid, his zeal(热情) had set him apart.
I missed him, but not for long. A few days later he popped in the door and joyfully said, “The librarian over there doesn’t let boys work in the library. My mother got me moved back to View Ridge. My dad will drop me off on his way to work. And if he can’t, I’ll walk!”
I should have sensed that such a strong will would take that young man wherever he wanted to go. What I could not have guessed, however, was that he would become a wizard(奇才)of the Information Age: Bill Gates, founder (创建者) of Microsoft and America’s richest man.

It was 15 years ago when I first came to Maine. Every March I was worried that spring might not come this year. The hills, sky and forest were gray, like an old painting. “Just wait,” a neighbor said. “You’ll w 86 up one morning and spring will just be there.”
Then there was an old apple tree. It sat on an undeveloped field in my neighborhood. It belonged to no one and therefore to e 87 . The tree’s dark branches sprawled (伸展)in the sky freely. No one ever pruned (修剪)it, but each spring it blossomed and the air became nice with the good s 88 of apples.
Until last year, I thought I was the only one aware of this tree. And then one day, I thought it should be pruned. I set out with a tool to remove a few branches. My neighbors heard me and they opened their doors to watch me. These were people I h 89 knew and spoke to, but it was as if I had come into their personal gardens.
My mobile-home neighbor was the first to speak. “You’re not cutting it down, are you?” Another neighbor warned me, “Don’t kill it, now!” Soon half the neighborhood had j 90 me under the apple tree. It struck me that I had lived there for five years and only now was learning these people’s names, what they did for a living and how they passed the winter. It was as if the old apple tree was gathering us under its branches --- for knowing each other and sharing wonder.
One thaw(融化n.)l 91 to another. Just the other day I saw one of my neighbors at the local store. We had a chat. He said this recent winter had been especially long and he felt s 92 not having seen or spoken to anyone in our neighborhood. And then, he looked at me and said, “We need to prune that apple tree again.”

Singing was not Clarkson’s only dream. When she was 11 years old, she wanted to become a marine biologist.
