Thoughts on the design:

本节课是本单元语法的第二课时,在前一课时中,学生已经掌握了名词性从句的基本用法。本课中教师要引导学生进行一些名词性从句的归纳和总结。

Teaching aims:

After learning this lesson, the students will be able to recognize some special uses of the noun clause. With this knowledge, students will get an overall idea of the use of the noun clause, which is helpful to improve their learning strategy.

Teaching procedures:

Step 1 Revision (ppt5-6)

1. Do the exercise and identify the noun clauses’ functions in the following sentences. (1) ______ the baby could speak made his parents very happy. A. That B. What C. Why D. If (2) I wonder ___ you will go shopping or stay at home. A. that B. if C. whether D. what (3) This is _____ he was often late for school. A. what B. that C. why D. whether

(4) We all know the truth ____ the earth moves around the sun. A. If B. that C. why D. whether

Answers: (1) A 主语从句 (2) C宾语从句 (3) C表语从句 (4) B同位语从句 2. Find clauses from the following sentences and tell the functions of them.

(1) At lunch time, the radio weatherman reported that the mist would become a thick fog in the afternoon. (宾语从句)

(2) The truth is that the fog is too thick for the bus to run that far. (表语从句) (3) What surprised me most was that the old man couldn’t see anything. (主语从句) (4) The fact that Polly didn’t ask for the man’s name is a pity. (同位语从句) [Explanation]

Step 2 More about the noun clauses: some tips Tip 1 the order of the noun clauses (ppt7-8)

Tip 2 the use of “if” and “whether” (ppt9-10)

Tip 3 the use of “that” and “what” (ppt11-12)

Tip 4 the use of other “wh-” words (ppt13-14)

Tip 5 the use in subjunctive mood (ppt15)

Correct the following sentences:

Tip 6 the use of preparatory subject it in subject clause and the object clause (ppt16)

Find the mistakes and correct them
