“It’s thought that a picture is worth a thousand words, but the outstanding achievement requires a photographer’s long-time hard work,” an organizer of NYC SALT said in an interview. In New York City, several high school students are getting the experience of a lifetime behind the lens at an after-school program called NYC SALT.
Founder and director of NYC SALT,Alicia Hansen, said the program aimed to encourage and empower high school students for digital photography and college preparation.
This program lasts 35 weeks and brings together 16 New York City students aged 14-19 who qualify for the free or reduced lunch. There is a formal application and interview process, and once chosen, the students will spend at least two afternoons a week in the lab working with different computer editing software and learning from experts in the field, many of whom volunteer their time.
Teachers also help the students with college applications, financial aid,and SAT/ACT prep(预科班).According to Hansen, since their first graduating class in 2011,every NYC SALT student has been accepted to college.
“SALT not only helped me to be a better photographer, but it also helped me to be a better person,” said Malik Sidibe.
In the program, students are encouraged to challenge themselves through a variety of projects where they take abstract photographs, portraits and cityscapes.
Perhaps the most meaningful part is that it’s not just a class to these students;it’s much more than that.“SALT is a family,” says Sidibe.“Everybody cares about each other.”
Everyone at SALT learns photography and storytelling skills, but it’s clear that this program has done much more to help these students to realize their potential.
As the program continues to grow in popularity,Hansen hopes that it continues to give its students a sense of confidence and an understanding of the importance of community, friendships and mentors(导师),which will benefit them a lifetime.
And she believes that they can do anything they set their mind to.There are opportunities all around them, and they just have to grab them.

Ⅱ.七选五阅读
(2018·山东青岛城阳期中检测)
If you intend to work with this book seriously,I suggest that you give yourself every advantage by carefully following the laws of learning:
Space your learning.
1 Each session may take one half hour to an hour and a half, depending on the amount of material and on your own speed of learning.Do one or two sessions at a
3
time—three if you’re going strong and are all involved—and always decide when you stop and exactly when you will return.
2
Everyone learns at a different pace.Fast learners are no better than slow learners—it’s the end result that counts, not the time it takes you to finish.
Review.
When you start a new session,go back to the last exercise of the previous session, cover your answers, and see how much you remember. 3
Test yourself.
You are not aiming for a grade,or putting your worth on the line, when you take the Comprehensive Tests. 4 You are deciding where repairs have to be made, and especially, you are experiencing a feeling of success at work that is well done.
Use these tests,as well as the abundant drill exercises,as aids to learning. No one is perfect, and no one learns in the exact same way or at the same speed as anyone else. 5 And then, give yourself every opportunity to exploit your actual, latent, and potential abilities.
But most important of all,as I will remind you several times throughout this book, develop a schedule and stick to it!
A.Do you have quick recall after a day,or you simply forget everything? B.This approach works better than any other method for learning words. C.On the contrary, you are discovering your weaknesses,if any. D.Every chapter of this book is divided into “sessions”. E.Real learning goes on only through active participation. F.Do not rush—go at your own comfortable speed.
G.Find the optimum technique and speed for your unique learning patterns.

(2018·山东日照期中检测)
When I walked into the classroom, the teacher was handing in test papers.I was feeling very nervous.I had not studied at all at the weekend as I had thought it would be easy test.I went through the test paper for many times but I could only answer three out from the twenty questions.I did not want to fail the exam. Then,I put my book under my desk, opening it and started looking for the answer. The teacher wasn’t looking at me,but I copied something.Suddenly,I felt a hand on my
shoulder! The teacher caught me cheating.I don’t know what to say.Luckily, the teacher did not punish for cheating but instead gave me the second chance.I felt very guilty and I won’t cheat again in the future.
