W: Oh, Mr. Bell, good afternoon. It’s so nice of you to come. Let’s have tea at once. Do you take your tea strong or weak? M: Strong, please.
W: Do you take it with milk? Here’s the milk-pot.
M: Oh, no, I don’t take milk with my tea, only a thin slice of lemon. W: Here you are. And help yourself to a pie, please. They’re apple pies. M: Oh, very delicious! Did you make it yourself?
W: Yes, I did. Would you like something more substantial? M: No, thank you.
W: Oh, I've forgotten to put some sugar in your tea. How many lumps? M: It’s all right. I don't take sugar at all if I have a pie with my tea. W: Some more tea? And may I help you to another pie?
M: No, thank you. I've had enough. Let’s go out into the garden. W: Yes, that will be delightful. Text 9
Good morning, students! It’s Jack here, the football coach here at Lincoln High. Principal Jones said I could make an announcement today. Of course, our big game is this weekend, and all of you are looking forward to it. Anyway, I want to tell you my favorite quote. “Education is what remains after one has forgotten what one has learned in school.” In my job, I work with athletes, but I always tell them not to forget their studies, too. Appreciate these days that you have to study and learn. That’s what school is about. Make the most of it. Have fun with your friends, be sociable at get-togethers, go to football games... But just be sure to get your homework done and listen and participate in class. You’re headed for bigger and better things. Some say college is a waste of time, but I don’t think so. There are things you learn in the process of learning that are priceless. There’s an education that goes on beyond what we read in textbooks and listen to in lectures. Life is one big educational process. Have a great day!
