PASSAGE II

2. Sports and You Step One
1) Yes, I participate in quite a few sports activities. I love football and I am on the department team. I also enjoy rowing and have participated in several boat races on West Lake. I took part in the table tennis tournament last year and played a few matches. Jogging is my favorite sport. I jog as much as I can, and plan to enter a winter marathon race some day when I’m ready. I love competitions and enjoy competing with other students. Sports are fun and they make me feel better and keep me fit.
2) No, I don’t do any sports at all except for those in my P.E. class. I am not strong enough
and easily get exhausted. That’s why I’ve never been interested in sports, even when I was in the middle school. Besides, I have to study very hard and don’t like to lag behind others. So I don’t have much time left for other activities. Step Two
In our group, only two members enjoy sports very much, and most of us do not
participate in many sports activities. Almost all of us love to play table tennis and badminton and often play them in the afternoon before supper. It seems true that sports play a bigger role in middle school than in college. Maybe it’s because we have to devote most of our time to studies, but it would be too hard for middle school kids to focus on their studies most of the time. We don’t like boxing because it’s too brutal and players might get injured.
3. What Makes for Excellence?
The reason is related to our tradition and training. Most children start playing badminton and table tennis in elementary school. They are not expensive sports and require hardly any equipment, so they have been popular in China for years. Other sports like Wushu and Qigong are Chinese, so it is not surprising that Chinese athletes excel in them. There is also a long tradition of acrobatics in Chinese culture, therefore it is natural that Chinese athletes are very strong in gymnastics. Chinese athletes have been strong in diving over the past 20 years perhaps because of excellent coaching. When some athletes start winning in a sport, they inspire other young people and become their role models.
In comparison to other international athletes, Chinese athletes do not excel in running. Black athletes dominate the short-distance and long-distance races—whether they are from the US or Africa. It’s probably related to the body type.
Football is quite a new sport in China, so it may take more time and money for Chinese

athletes to excel in this. It has now become the most popular team sport in the country, and therefore will result in excellence sooner or later.
4. Air Your Opinions Sample
Problem A: Drugs are dangerous and they are forbidden. Athletes should be role models
for young sports fans. If they don’t set a good example, perhaps their fans will follow them and take drugs, too. Winning is important, but the spirit of the Olympic Games—peace, friendship and fair play— is more important. Coaches, governments and officials concerned should take measures to prevent this harmful behavior.
Problem B: It is a great honor to host the Olympic Games. However, each country or city should
respect the spirit of the Olympic Games, and obey the rules to compete with each other. The spirit of the Olympic Games is peace, friendship and fair play. If some countries or cities use illegal ways to attain their aim, the great spirit of the Games will be violated.
Problem C: This is a dirty practice and will make people, especially sports fans, indignant.
Referees should obey the regulations strictly and develop a down-to-earth attitude towards sports competitions so as to treat each athlete equally. The International Olympic Committee should observe referees’ work carefully, punish regulation violators and dismiss them from the sports ground.
Problem D: I don’t think hiring international coaches is always bad. If they are more experienced
than the local ones, why not have them help make achievements? Good results really matter. However, it’s a pity that some famous athletes choose to work for other countries and compete against those from their own countries since athletes stand for their motherlands. They are not individuals any more during international games.
5. Do They Deserve So Much?
-- Athletes train very hard. The intensity is beyond what we can imagine. They get up very early in the morning and have a very vigorous training regime no matter how cold or hot it is. Coaches can be very harsh. In fact, very few athletes can get good results in world-class competitions. What’s more, their sports life is comparatively short compared with pop stars, who don’t train as hard as athletes, but they earn more and are more popular for a longer period of time. I don’t think that’s fair. So in my opinion, star athletes deserve what they get. -- I don’t think they deserve what they get. Most jobs involve strict training and are challenging too, but few people can make as much money as star athletes do. For example, scientists spent time and money to get a good education, and they have to work very hard to be able to make achievements in different areas. Now think about what they get. They can never be as popular as star athletes and their income means nothing as compared with athletes.
