I’m glad to receive your emails written in Chinese. Considering some mistakes in your letters, I would like to give you some suggestions about how to improve your Chinese study.
First of all, it is a good idea to read books about Chinese history and culture. Besides, you can learn Chinese words and idioms through example sentences to better understand the meaning of them. More importantly, do not feel upset when you make mistakes, which will help you make great progress in learning Chinese.
I hope that you will use Chinese naturally soon in the near future.
Yours, Li Hua 读后续写
Then my mom realized her purse was missing. She looked everywhere for it and suddenly remembered that after paying the rickshaw wallah, she kept the purse on the seat before getting off. She had forgotten to pick up her purse which contained a lot of money. When my father came to know about this, he said that it was too late to look for the rickshaw wallah. We all decided that it was better to forget it. Mom felt sad and worried while sitting for dinner.
We were just about to begin eating when the door bell rang. Bharat opened the door and called my mother to see who it was. To our surprise, it was the poor rickshaw wallah standing at our entrance with a
big smile on his weather-beaten face. He had the purse in his hand. He explained that he had returned to the market before he realized what had happened. When my mother opened the purse, she found all the cash in it. We wanted to reward the lovely man but he smiled and said, ”Madam, I’m poor but not a thief” and went away quickly. 附听力原文: Text 1
W: Mike, I heard you’re going to Charleroi. Are you visiting friends there?
M: No. You know, I’m really interested in photography. So I want to look at some great works of photography. I can do that at Charleroi Photography Museum. Text 2
W: Hi, John. Sarah told me that your daughter missed three days of school last week. Is everything OK?
M: Yes, everything is fine, Carol. Tammy was running a fever for a few days, so she stayed at home. But she’s almost OK now. Text 3
M: Mary, what do you like doing on the weekend? Shopping or watching movies?
W: Neither. I love reading books, so when I’ve time on the weekend I love looking for new books. Lucky for me, there’re many places to discover and buy new books. Text 4
W: Why didn’t you call me last night? I was waiting for you to call me and tell me the address of the party.
M: What? I sent you three or four messages. Text 5
W: What would you like to drink, sir? Juice or milk? M: Can I have a beer?
W: Sorry, sir, but we don’t provide beer on this plane. M: Well, please give me a glass of fruit juice. Text 6
M: Do you know the surfer in the picture?
W: Yes. She is Bethany Hamilton. She was my neighbor when I lived in Hawaii.
M: What happened to her arm? Did she have a car accident?
W: No. In 2003 a shark bit off her left arm while she was practicing surfing. But she didn’t let the tragedy stop her from becoming a professional surfer. She decided she would get back on the surfboard. After only 26 days, she was surfing again. She now ranks among the top 50 female surfers in the world. M: She’s really awesome.
W: Yes. Her story has inspired many people not to give up. Text 7
W: I can’t believe tomorrow is the last day of our vacation. I know we’ve seen most of the local sights, but there’s still one more thing I’d like to do. Do you remember me telling you about that garden near here? They offer a tour of the grounds followed by a wine tasting, and all of their guides are wine experts.
M: That sounds like a lot of fun. Can we just buy tickets there in person, or do we need to call to book in advance?
W: Tickets are only sold through their website. But don’t worry. I already bought some.
M: That’s great. Then if everything is ready for tomorrow, let’s go out for dinner. I saw a nice cafe down the street. W: OK. Text 8
W: Good morning, Beautiful Smile Dentistry! How may I help you? M: Good morning, I’d like to schedule a check-up.
W: I’d be happy to do that for you. Have you been to Beautiful Smile before? M: Yes, I have. My last check-up was six months ago. W: Great! Can I get your name, please? M: Of course. My name is Steve Cook.
W: Thank you, Mr. Cook. Which dentist did you see on your last check-up? M: I’m not sure, really. I’m a bit forgetful.
W: That’s OK. Let me check your chart. Oh, it’s Dr. Lee. He has time next Thursday morning. Is that OK?
M: Hmm, that’s not good. I’ve got to work. How about the next day?
W: OK. Would you like to suggest a time? M: Does he have anything open in the afternoon? W: Yes. We could fit you in at 2:30 in the afternoon. M: Great. That’ll work.
W: OK. Thank you for calling, Mr. Cook! We’ll see you next week. M: Thank you! Bye-bye! Text 9
W: Look at us! We’ve met for a chat here and we’re not even talking to each other. I really hate it. M: Sorry, I didn’t catch that. I was just sending a message. W: But the real-life person should come first. Don’t you think?
M: Yeah, but sometimes you just need to send a quick message. I don’t think it’s rude. In fact, I think it’s rude to ignore messages, actually.
W: Yeah, I suppose so. But for me, the biggest disadvantage of having a mobile phone is that we can’t constantly pay attention to what’s happening in the real world! You’ve got your best friend sitting right in front of you. Maybe it’s time to switch off. M: All right.
W: We can make a bet — the one who uses the phone first needs to buy two cups of coffee. M: Sure. It’ll give me something to post on my WeChat later. W: You can take a photo of us and add it to your post. M: Hey, don’t make me lose the bet. W: You see. That doesn’t hurt too much.
M: I like this feeling of freedom. I’m going to keep my phone off all day. Text 10
M: As you are learning Chinese social problems now, I would like to share the result of a recent survey with you.
The researchers asked 20,000 young people in 20 countries, including China, the US and the UK, how they think and feel about the world. They found that 53 percent of those questioned in China think the world is becoming a better place. That’s the highest percentage among the countries in the survey, followed by India with 49 percent.
When asked why they felt hopeful for the future, 93 percent of those Chinese youth said it was
because advances of technology like medicine, new energy and the Internet might make life in the future easier.
However, Chinese young people seem to worry about something else. As much as 82 percent of them worry about climate change. That’s a lot more than the number of people who care about the environmental problems in other countries. We can see that Chinese young people are quite different from their previous generations. I hope each of you can write a report on this problem after class.
