Speaking two languages rather than just one is good in the modern world. But in recent years, scientists have shown that the advantages of bilingualism(双语) are even more fundamental than being able to communicate with a lot of people. Being bilingual makes you smarter. It can have a deep effect on your brain, improving your cognitive(认知) skills and even fighting against diseases in your old age.
This view of bilingualism is different very much from the understanding of bilingualism through the 20th century. Researchers and educators long considered a second language to be an interference(阻碍,干扰) that stop a child’s academic (学术的) and intellectual development. There is evidence that in a bilingual’s brain, both language systems are active even when he is using only one language, thus creating situations in which one system influence the other. But this interference, researchers are finding out isn’t so serious. On the contrary, it forces the brain to resolve internal conflicts(矛盾), resulting in the mind strengthening its abilities.
Bilinguals seem to be more experienced than monolinguals(单语者) at solving certain kinds of mental puzzles. In a study, bilingual and monolingual students were asked to sort blue circles and red squares presented on a computer screen into two digitalcontainers (数字容器) — one marked with a blue square and the other marked with a red circle. In the first task, the children had to sort the shapes by color, placing blue circles in the container marked with the blue square and red squares in the container marked with the red circle. Both groups did this with ease. Next, the children were asked to sort (分类) by shape, which was more challenging because it required placing the images in a container marked with a different color. The bilinguals were quicker at performing this task.
Researchers thought the bilingualism would help train the bilingual mind to ignore
distractions(注意力分散) in other surroundings. But that explanation increasingly appears to be not enough.
The key difference between bilinguals and monolinguals may be more basic: an increased ability to monitor the environment. “Bilinguals can use languages randomly — they may talk to their father in one language and to their mother in another language,” says Albert Costa, a researcher. In a study comparing German-Italian bilinguals with Italian monolinguals on monitoring tasks, Mr. Costa and his colleagues found that the bilinguals not only performed better, but also did so with less activity in parts of the brain involved in monitoring. That means they were more efficient at it.
Nobody ever doubted the power of language. But who would have imagined that the words we hear and the sentences we speak might be leaving such a deep effect? 56. In the writer’s opinion, the understanding of bilingualism through the 20th century is .

How to keep a healthy student-teacher relationship
A healthy student-teacher relationship is important for both student and teacher. A student may feel his or her teacher is there to help him or her succeed and a teacher may feel that the student appreciates his or her work. Developing healthy student-teacher relationships takes time and hard work, but once those relationships are established, it becomes easier to teach your classes. Here are the things you can do to achieve the goal.
61. Ask students about their hobbies, family backgrounds, likes and dislikes. Make a point of greeting students by name when you see them. Take part in some of the students’ activities if you get an invitation and try to talk to all of the students. This shows that you care about the student as a friend, not just as a student, which can make your students be more likely to communicate with you.
62. Parental involvement can help improve students’ performance. Too often, teachers wait until there is a major problem to contact (联系) the parents. Contact all parents at the beginning of the school year before problems occur and keep communication lines open. You don’t have to go so far as to give weekly updates, but you can allow parents to contact you for any reason.
63. When a student behaves in inappropriate (不适当的) ways, it’s easy to label him or her as a “bad” student. Doing so, however, negatively affects the way you see the student
and the way he or she behaves in class, making the problem worse. Instead, criticize his or her behavior, but make it clear that you still like him or her as a friend.
64. Make sure everyone has a fair turn. Some students are more demanding of your attention than others, but it’s important for you to make sure that everyone gets equal time and attention. Try to make all the students get equal chances to answer your questions and perform in front of the class now and then.
65. Respect is a two-way street. When you give your students respect, they’ll respect you in return. Understand that each student has his or her own opinion and style. Teach in ways that allow him or her to grow and become his or her own person. For example, instead of spending all of your class time lecturing, do many hands-on (实践的) activities to encourage learning.
