Using American Movies and TV Shows to Improve Your English

Day One

Step 1: Watch the whole show/movie. Just to get a feeling for it. Do the best you can to understand it. You can use Chinese subtitles.

Step 2: Choose the first two or three minutes that you will use to practice and then watch only that. Turn on the English subtitles ONLY (no Chinese subtitles) and watch the same two or three minutes again. As you listen and read along, write down any words or phrases that you don't know. Then pause. Steph 3: Look up the meaning of those words and phrases that you didn't know. Go back to the

beginning of the scene that you are watching. Review the new vocabulary that you have written down. Watch the same scene again, English subtitles still on. Pause and review your vocabulary again. Do it quickly, no stress. Just look it over. Relax, take one minute to review. Go back to the beginning and watch it again. You'll hear the new words and phrases again. Do this four or five more times. You're done for the day! Day Two

Step 1: Watch the SAME scene that you watched the day before. NO SUBTITLES. Listen very carefully. You'll hear the new words and phrases. Pause. Review your vocabulary list again. Go back to the

beginning and play the same scene. No subtitles. Your listening should be getting better. Replay six or seven times, listening very carefully. NO SUBTITLES. You're done for the day!

Day Three

You should remember mostly everything in this first two or three minutes. Now time to work on your pronunciation.

Play the same scene, but play only one or two sentences and then PAUSE. Then, you repeat the

sentence. Try to copy the actors' pronunciation. Say it the same way they say it. Play the next sentence. PAUSE. Again , you say it the same way the actors are saying it. Sentence by sentence, go through the whole scene (same two or three minutes). LIsten, PAUSE, you say the sentence the same way the actors say it. Use the same EMOTION and PROUNCIATION as the actors. Listen very carefully and say it exactly the same as they do. Do this five to ten times. You're done for the day!

Day Four

Same scene! Start at the beginning again. Now you're going to \the actors are saying, but no pausing this time. You can turn on the English subtitles and say the dialogue along with the actors trying to use the same EMOTION and PRONUN CIATION as the actors. Using a LOUD voice, say the words along with the actors AT THE SAME TIME. This will be difficult but try to keep up as well as you can. You'll probably be a little behind, but just a little. REWIND and PLAY IT AGAIN 5 to 10 times. You're done for the day! Day Five

Use the same scene and do the \their same emotion, use their same voice - even try to use their same BODY LANGUAGE. If they are smiling when they speak, YOU smile when you say the lines. If they look sad, YOU look sad. Copy everything, especially their voices. Do it again 5 to 10 times. You're done for the day! Day Six

Do the \get to the end of the scene (two or three minutes), stop the recorder. Rewind to the beginning and play the scene again. Just listening this time. PAUSE. Now play the recording of yourself and listen. Compare yourself to the actors. How close are you? Do you sound like they do? Do you have the same RHYTHM? Do you have the same PRONUNCIATION? Does the EMOTION sound the same? Is the speed the same? Of course, you will not be exactly like the actors - but how close are you and what is different? Don't stress. Your brain will know what to do to correct the differences between you and the actors.

Now you are ready to go to scene two - the next two or three minutes of the show. You will repeat all of the above steps with scene 2! Then you will repeat the steps with scene number 3 and scene number 4 (two or three minute sections).

This may take a few months to get through a show, but if you do it you will MASTER the pronunciation and your LISTENING ABILITY will be SO MUCH BETTER! Your speaking and pronunciation will be faster, more natural, and more fluent.
