Emma and Ryan, a married couple, were driving to a friend’s house when Emma turned to Ryan and asked, “Would you like to stop for lunch?”
Ryan replied, “No, I’m not hungry yet.” and continued driving. Meanwhile, Emma sat quietly fuming in the passenger seat. 1 He had thought she was asking if he was hungry, but in reality, Emma was telling him that she was hungry and wanted to stop for lunch.
2 Deborah Tannen, professor of linguistics at Georgetown University in the United States, has studied conversational differences between men and women, and believes that some problems occur because men and women may grow up with different conversational rules.
In Emma and Ryan’s situation, Emma was making a request in the form of a question. 3 She needed Ryan to agree they were both hungry. So, Emma asked Ryan what he wanted. She was really telling Ryan what she wanted, however, Ryan did not understand this. If he had been hungry, he would have said something more direct, such as “I’m hungry. Let’s have lunch.”
Tannen believes that most women grow up in a world where talk is used to express feelings, to stay emotionally close to friends and partners, and to reach agreement. However, she believes that most men are raised differently and they tend to keep their feelings to themselves.
4 Every day they meet for lunch and Alana sees this as an opportunity to talk and become close. However, she usually gets frustrated because Oliver does not start much of the conversation, and instead, is happy to eat in silence.
Tannen says, for men like Oliver, talk is often used as a contest, to be used outside the home to gain respect, to entertain and get attention, and exchange information. 5 These men do not always feel it is necessary to talk to feel close or to express their feelings. Women, on the other hand, are encouraged to speak about their feelings since this is a way to build relationships.

Everyone has their favorite invention. Some of us even make lists of them. One survey recently named the toilet as the world’s greatest ever invention, while another named the bicycle. Anyway, they’re the past, but what about the future? What inventions will shape our lives? J.B.S Haldance, a British scientist warned that whatever hadn’t happened would happen and no one would be safe from it. Whether you agree or not, one thing is beyond doubt: human beings need to invent a few things pretty quickly. Here is our own list.
Number one is a new source of power. Oil is running out. It would take millions of years to produce fresh oil. Once our oil is gone, it’s gone forever. We have about 50 years’ worth left, less if rates of industrialization accelerate. A hundred million new cars will need lots of oil. At a recent

conference about the world’s future, scientist Hilary Craft said we had already found the answer: solar power. She suggested that we could expect enormous mirrors in the sky that would reflect sunlight and provide the world’s electricity. We wait with bated breath.
Number two on our list is a waste processor. Throughout most of history we just threw the rubbish out the back door. If the jungle didn’t swallow it, wild animals would get it. Once the jungles disappeared, we started burying our waste underground or chucking it into the sea. Now we’re running out of space. If we want to avoid choking the Earth, we’d better find a way to recycle more effectively. According to inventor Ray Kurzweill, tiny self-replicating microscopic robots will convert rubbish into new sources of energy. Another inventor, Clara Petrovic, said she was working on the prototype that would convert waste into bricks and other building material.
Number three on our list is biological ID. Criminal investigator Alexis Smithson said that in the past, thieves had always taken objects. Now they steal your identity. ID theft is the fastest-growing type of crime. So how will we stop it? You can expect to have tiny microchips injected into your body; scanners will read your genetic information to check your ID. Or worse, you may need to provide skin cells whenever you go shopping. Imagine scratching yourself at the checkout every time you buy the groceries. Supermarkets will never be the same.
Finally, medicine. In the past, a cold killed you. In 1374—1350, the Black Death killed half of Europe’s population. Now we are examining people’s genes for signs of future illness. Find the disease early enough and you can prevent it. Glen Hiemastra of the Futurist.com recently claimed that somewhere on planet Earth there is a young child who will be the first person to live forever. If that happens we’ll need another invention: a new pensions system.

I’ll never forget the day I met Sarah and her glowing personality. At the beginning of my senior year of high school, I had that usual senior attitude—anxious, excited, and a little proud. I wanted to enjoy my senior year, and I didn’t like meeting or befriending any lowerclassmen, especially not the new kids. Fortunately, my arrogance was overcome the moment I met Sarah in my computer class on the first day of school. She was so friendly, sweet, and really excited about being at the school.
Only ten minutes of small talk endeared Sarah to my heart. She liked basketball. Basketball was one of the highlights of my childhood, and our slightly weak team was always thrilled to welcome new players.
She was taller than me by a couple of inches, and my five-foot-seven frame was unfortunately the tallest on our team. Each practice, as we worked together toward our common goal, we became closer. She was always so encouraging and positive, like nothing could get her down.
I remember clearly an early game we attended that December. We were playing against a tough team. The game went back and forth, and victory was up for grabs. However, it looked like our team would not pull through. Three of our starters had broken rules several times, being forced to leave, and we were falling behind until Sarah entered the game with great enthusiasm. She played well, but it was her attitude that helped us the most. “We’re going to win this!” was her saying. And we did! After that game, I remember admiring Sarah’s determination to succeed and her powerful encouragement. She seemed fearless of any obstacle.
Unfortunately, weeks later, Sarah had a terrible car accident on her way to school. For a day or two, no one knew if she would survive. Then the doctors said she would never walk again.
Hearing the tragic news, my heart sank. My spirits were instantly lifted, however, as I watched classmates, friends and teachers earnestly praying for Sarah’s recovery.
A few weeks later when I visited Sarah in the hospital, I realized the extent of her positive attitude. She had impacted her family, friends, our basketball team and even the nurses with her
