People and animals often enjoy loving relation-ships with each other. In the wild, animals sometimes carry out dramatic rescues of people in dangerous situations, miraculously(奇迹般地)sensing human needs and jumping in without fear to help.

The fishermen reported that, when they discovered Elian, he was repeating a prayer that his mother had taught him before drowning, asking guardian angels to protect him.

C

Even for a certified teacher with a degree and teaching certificate from Florida, a certain embarrassment exists. The two words “English teacher” don?t clearly show who I am.

Let me explain: When I go back to the US, I meet all my old friends. Some are stressed, exhausted and generally unhappy. They are stuck in jobs they don?t love that they do only to pay the bills. Even the ones making good money don?t even have the time to spend it and enjoy themselves. If I were in the US and I was working as a teacher, accountant, lawyer or so on, then that would be my job more or less for the next 30 to 40 years. I might have other talents, but I would be limited in being able to explore them.

In China the system is fluid for everyone: Chinese and expats(侨民). I know many friends, both Chinese and expats, who changed careers because they wanted something new and it didn?t require going back to university four more years. All it required was motivation and a calculated risk. One of the best things about living in China for me is that I can explore different career choices and actually find one that I truly love. Let?s face it people change over the years: Your likes, your abilities and even the things that make you happy are constantly changing. Why shouldn?t your jobs and the opportunities also change with you?

When people ask me if I love my job, my answer is ?YES.? In China I have had many jobs: actor, model, salesman and teacher at various stages during my seven years here. And no one told me “You can?t do that.” There was no self-limiting. In China, if you have the motivation to work hard and the drive to succeed then opportunities present themselves around every corner.

28. Why the term “English teacher” couldn?t explain the author?s role in China clearly? A. Because he has taken many different jobs in China. B. Because he has no choice but to be an English teacher.

C. Because the purpose of his teaching is to make good money. D. Because there?re too many jobs for him to choose from. 29. Why are some of the author?s old friends generally unhappy? A. Because they have no chance to work in China as teachers. B. Because it?s even harder for them to earn money in the US now. C. Because they have no ability to explore their other talents. D. Because they can?t get away from the work they don?t enjoy.

30. What does the underlined word “fluid” in Paragraph 3 mean? A. Strict. B. Fixed. C. Changeable. D. Exciting.

31. What does the author think of China?

A. A country without motivations. B. A land of opportunity. C. A nation full of foreigners. D. A place short of jobs.

Fireworks have been enjoyed by countless people ever since they were invented in China during the Tang Dynasty hundreds of years ago. From small family gatherings (团聚) to huge global celebrations, there isn?t a party that couldn?t be made more fun with a few fireworks. But it seems that there?s a big price to pay for some brief beauty and entertainment.

It?s been discovered that fireworks contain metals such as copper ( 铜 ) and lead, in addition to other pollutants like perchlorates (高氯酸盐). According to the Environmental Protection Agency, perchlorates can form naturally or be manufactured (制造).

This is a cause for concern because perchlorates negatively affect the thyroid gland (甲状腺), which impacts important bodily functions like blood pressure and heart rate.

2

Furthermore, a study conducted by Terry Gordon, a professor at New York University, examined the emissions(排放)whose sizes were big enough to enter the lungs. They concluded that these emissions may lead to various dangerous conditions like cancer, heart attacks, and strokes (中风).

Nonetheless, the negative effects of firework emissions can be observed in birds. Britain?s Royal Society for the Protection of Birds urges against launching fireworks close to wildlife areas as they may cause confusion among birds.

In 2010, an incident involving 5,000 red-winged blackbirds falling out of the sky on New Year?s Eve in Arkansas, US supported this idea. A fireworks display held at a nesting ground for blackbirds led to the birds? night vision being affected, causing them to fall to their deaths.

Arguably (可以说), the use of fireworks during celebrations may be due to a general lack of awareness of how they pollute our environment. Companies and researchers could take this cue ( 线索 ) and find new, eco-friendly alternatives.

After all, for all the beauty fireworks bring, there?s no better beauty than that of our planet?s. 32. According to the article, perchlorates contained in fireworks ______. A. do harm to the thyroid gland B. raise the risk of cancer C. are dangerous when put in water D. are made from copper and lead 33. Terry Gordon concluded from his research that ______.

A. fireworks are directly connected with lung cancer B. the waste from fireworks could threaten our body

C. chemicals in fireworks could increase our blood pressure D. our body is strong enough to fight against the pollutants in fireworks

34. The example of red-winged blackbirds is used to show that ______.

A. birds are more sensitive to environmental changes than people B. chemicals in fireworks could make birds go blind

C. firework displays could cause serious damage to nature D. no efforts are being made to protect wild birds

35. What is the author?s attitude toward the use of fireworks?

A. Positive. B. Negative. C. Uninterested. D. Neutral. 第二节 (共 5 小题;每小题 2 分,满分 10 分)

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

The Elements of Success

I don?t believer that there is any one recipe for success. 36 ----and not all of them are needed for success. The more factors you have on your side, the more likely you are to succeed, and positive attitude is just one of those factors. Her are some additional factors that are also important.

Knowledge

A strong body of knowledge about the area in which you wish to succeed is often one of the key building blocks of success. 37 ---read and try out the foundational materials and push yourself into challenging areas to build your knowledge.

Clear goals and planning

Much like a trip, it?s a lot easier to get where you want to go if you know where you?re going and spend the time planning the route you?ll take to get there. Think about what your definition of success exactly is, and then identify some of the things that need to be done to help you move towards it.

38 Hard work is another key to finding success. You don?t become a champion without practicing every day. If you want to succeed in a certain area, work hard in that area and go beyond what others are doing--- deliberate practice is one big key.

Luck and opportunity

Luck and opportunity also play an important role in success---- 39 . You can prove your luck by making as many strong personal contacts as you can and sharing what you have to increase their “luck” and “opportunities”.

Cooperation and support

40 ----the fact that others are working in small ways to help you succeed rather than prevent you. A spouse telling you that you can do this is going to go a lot further than a spouse telling you you?ll never make it. A. You can build this by pushing yourself B. the most important factor C. Consistent effort

D. Instead, I believe success is the result of a combination of a lot of different factors E. Deliberate work

F. sometimes things just click due to forces outside your control G. Along with luck comes cooperation 第三部分 语言知识运用(共两节,满分45分)第一节 (共 20 小题;每题 1.5 分,满分 30 分)

When it?s raining cats and dogs outside, I go through my mum?s old diaries, reading them with complicated feelings.

Years ago, when I was thirteen years old, I found 41 just lying around her 42 room. That day I read each line with growing 43 and thrill. I couldn?t believe that woman who fed me as a baby and read me fairy tales had written this. I will never forget the first line I read: “They all want to take me and 44 me!”

45 I remembered the other day, when she was 46 around the house. I was sitting at the dining room table with my grandmother, working on a five-thousand-piece puzzle(拼图) that seems to take a 47 to solve. Suddenly, the front door was violently thrown open. My mother ran in screaming at the top of her lungs. Then she ran into the room and shoved(推) our puzzle off the table, smashing it into the five thousand pieces we had 48 . It scared me. 49 , something was 50 my mother. My 51 ended then, when the doctor told me she had hallucinations(幻想症). I started to understand that her illness wasn?t something I could 52 .
