If you feel uncomfortable with this, you can just say “thanks” and leave the food there. Don’t 7 your chopsticks upright into the rice bowl. Instead, lay them on your dish. The reason for this is that when somebody 8 ,the shrine (圣殿) to him has a bowl of sand or rice with two chopsticks which are stuck upright in it. It is impolite to set the teapot down where the spout (壶嘴) is facing 9 somebody. The spout should always be directed to where nobody is sitting, usually just outward from the table.

Don’t hit your bowl with your chopsticks. Beggars hit their bowls,so this is not polite. Also, when the food is coming too 10 in a restaurant, people will hit their bowls. An Arab (阿拉伯人) was walking through the Sahara desert. He was dying for water. Then he saw something far off in the distance. The Arab hoped to find water, so he walked towards the image. To his disappointment (失望), he only found a little old Jewish man sitting behind a card table. On the table there were some ties. The Arab asked, “Please, I’m really thirsty. Can I have some water?”

The man replied, “I don’t have any water, but why don’t you buy a tie? Here’s one that goes nicely with your clothes.” The Arab shouted angrily, “I don’t want a tie. I just need water!”

“OK, don’t buy a tie. But to show you what a nice guy I am, I’ll tell you that over that hill there is a nice restaurant four miles away from here. Walk that way, and they’ll give you all the water you want.” The Arab thanked him and walked away towards the hill and finally disappeared.

Three hours later the Arab came back. He crawled (爬行) to the man who was still sitting at his card table. He said, “I told you the nice restaurant was over that hill. Didn’t you find it?”

The Arab answered in a dying voice, “I found it alright, but they wouldn’t let me in. They said I was supposed to wear a tie.” ( )1. Dear Liz,

My stay in Thailand has certainly been the experience of my life.

Life is busy and exciting.Bangkok is just like any other big city with a population of 10 million and heavy traffic.I'm very lucky because my host family is in a nice quiet area outside the city. There are Mr. and Mrs. Phairat, their son Sanan, who is 18, the daughter Chinda, who is 16, and Grandpa and Grandma.

I go to an international school with Sanan and Chinda. The school teaches about 70 percent in English, and 30 percent in Thai. I've learned some spoken language, but Thai writing is very difficult. The cooking lesson is my favorite. I'm learning all about Thai food and culture. People don’t use chopsticks here, but spoons and forks. When I come back, I'm going to cook you a real Thai meal.

Last weekend we visited some temples. We also drove to Pattaya beach near Bangkok.I thought it was great, but Sanan and Chinda say that next month they’re taking me to Phuket Island, where the beaches are even more beautiful. The month after next, we’re going to travel to Mr. Phairat’s hometown in the north of Thailand. The Phairats own land there, and they have two elephants.I’m going to ride those elephants — and even wash them. Sanan and Chinda say it’s really fun.

I'm amazed by everything in this country, especially by the elephants. Elephants are an important pan of Thai culture and way of life. They have been a traditional symbol of Thailand for many years in times of war and peace. In the seventh century,a Thai king trained 20,000 elephants for battle.

I’ll tell you all about my Thai boxing lessons next time I write.

Love, Mandy
