Book Report of a Little Princess
This book report is written for Ms Lu and class 4. The title of the book is A Little Princess written by Burnett, F.H. The famous work of Burnett, F.H. is The Secret Garden. She was a American writer who was good at writing sentimental novels and children’s stories. In her books, sentiment and romance flow naturally. Many of her works have been adapted to the films. The number of the book is 260. And it was published by Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press in 2006. It’s a nice book because when you read the words, you can feel the kindness and warmth, and be touched by the little princess.
Characters:
Sara Crewe is the little princess. The novel goes on as her statue changes. Captain Crewe, Sara’s father, only relative who loves Sara very much so that he can give her anything she wants.
Miss Minchin: the headmaster of the seminary who is a strict and stone-hearted woman. Her bad quantities serve as a foil to Sara’s gracious virtues.
Ermengarde, Becky, Lottie: Sara’s three best friends. Their friendship proves the old saying—A friend in need is a friend indeed.
The Plot : Mr·Crewe and his daughter Sara Crewe lived in India. Because Mr Crewe wanted to invest a diamond mine with his friend, he sent little Sara to a seminary in London where her mother had stayed before. Unfortunately, her father’s company went bankrupt and his friend escaped with all money. And Mr Crewe became wicker and wicker, and died after a while. So immediately Sara became a orphan. And she must work as a maid to pay off her expense. Sara treated everyone with her sincere heart no matter he or she was rich or poor. She did like this all the time. Because of her virtue, she was also popular to the other girls in the seminary. And she got an anonymous friend, a India gentleman, who helped Sara a lot secretly. The truth was that the India gentleman was Mr Crewe’s very friend. He didn’t escape. He just had a very serious fever and when he came to his life, Mr Crewe had died. So he was determined to find out the little Sara and make up for her. And the last was a happy ending.
My understanding to the novel:
From the novel and the main character, I think the author is vibrant and full of enthusiasm to her life. She wants to show the optimistic side of life to people, even a girl who nearly becomes a beggar also takes on her value.
Everyone is born with equal rights. It seems that this concept has been built into Sara’s deepest heart. Although she is very rich, she has never been spoiled and had a good temper. She likes Ermengarde who was excluded by some other girls and considers her as best friend. And Becky is a black maid in the seminary. No one wants to talk to her except Sara. These prove that Sara is approachable. Above all, Sara’s
kindness covers Mr Melchisedec’s family, a rat family. She is willing to keep company the rats in the attic.
No matter where and when we are, we should keep love in our heart, because some day our love will get award. Sara tells me. She loves the big family living in the next door, because they are full of happiness and warmth. She also loves the litter beggar girl in the street because the girl is more pitiful than her. And she loves the India gentleman living opposite her attic, because she thinks the gentleman is wick and lonely. She loves so many people and she always requites evil with good.
The theme of the novel is to deliver the kindness from one to another so that it will never die. In the last of the novel, the author arrange the plot that the litter girl mentioned above makes her mind to help other people with her whole life after she was saved by Sara.
In sum, the little princess, although she is not really a princess, teaches me that keep optimistic all the time, because sometimes no one can help us, we should keep hopes in our hearts and save us by ourselves. I am impressed by her words: any girl in the world is a princess, so she should behave like a princess—never give up and try her best to help her loyalty.
