A Malian immigrant(移民), who has been praised as a hero for saving a small boy that was hanging from a balcony in Paris, is to be made a French citizen for his selfless act of courage.

My dad, Jacob Robin, was born and raised in Mount Wolf, Pennsylvania, and in 1927, at the age of 28, he decided to go south for the winter.

Surprisingly, the only transportation he had for this long trip was his trusty bicycle. As summer was coming to an end, he packed a few necessities in a box, tied it on his bike and started on the long journey. Dad would ride all day, and in the evening he’d stop at a farmhouse along the way and offer to do some work in exchange for food and a place to sleep. As he got farther south, he’d find a church where he could bed down for the night. Surrounded by orange and grapefruit groves(树丛), he always had plenty to eat for breakfast.

Finally, he reached Tampa, a rapidly growing city where there was plenty of work. He got a job with a construction company, and he built himself a little shack(棚屋) that he could call home.

Dad loved his job and made lots of friends, but as the months rolled along, he began thinking of home. Spring was fast approaching back in Pennsylvania, so he decided it was time to leave the south and head back to Mount Wolf.

Luckily, dad’s boss and crew obtained other work that was taking them north, so the boss offered to take dad along and drop him off in Pennsylvania. It’s hard for me to imagine traveling all that way to Florida on a bicycle, and it would have been worse heading into the cool spring of the north.

If you asked dad what he did with his bicycle and shack when he left Florida, he would smile and say, “I gave them all to a homeless man.”

Almost 10 years have passed since China applied a nationwide ban on the use of plastic bags for free and banned the production, sale and use of environmental unfriendly bags.

The June 1st, 2008 ban has failed to remove plastic bags thinner than 0.025 millimeters from the market, which are still given away free at roadside stalls and small shops. They are just a small part of China’s plastic bag problem. Large supermarkets and department stores charge for thicker plastic bags, but the fee of 0.2 yuan or 0.3 yuan is too low to stop customers from using them. The rapid development of online shopping and food delivery services means the country is under great pressure to deal with its increasing plastic waste.

The government recently promised to explore new ways to reduce the plastic waste, especially the online sellers and takeout food waste packaging. The lessons of the past need to be made full use of for any new measures to be effective.

The ban on ultrathin plastic bags has failed because of lax (不严格的) law performance. Also, many of the so-called biodegradable (可生物降解的) plastic bags are not really biodegradable and cost two to three times as a non-biodegradable bag, which prevents cost-sensitive businesses from using them.

It has been projected that by 2050 the amount of plastic in the oceans will outweigh all the fish. And it is worth bearing in mind that as it breaks up micro plastic particles can enter the food chain. It is not only businesses that need to change their behavior, efforts must be made to raise consumers’ awareness of the consequences of using plastic bags.
