A water bearer (脚夫) in India had two large pots, each hung on each end of a pole which he carried across his neck. One of the pots had a crack in it, and at the end of the long walk from the stream to the master's house, the cracked pot arrived only half full.

For two years this went on daily, with the bearer delivering only one and a half pots full of water to his master's house. The poor cracked pot was ashamed of its own flaw (瑕疵), and miserable that it was able to accomplish only half of what it had been made to do. The cracked pot spoke to the water bearer one day by the stream.

I planted flower seeds on your side of the path, and every day while we walk back from the stream, you've watered them. A letter to Edward, a columnist (报刊专栏作家)

Mr Edward :

I grew up in an unhappy and abusive (辱骂的) home. I always promised myself that I’d get out as soon as possible. Now, at age 20, I have a good job and a nice house, and I’m really proud of the independence I’ve achieved.

Here’s the problem: several of my friends who still live with their parents wish they had places like mine — so much so that they make mine theirs.

It started out with a couple of them spending the weekends with me. But now they seem to take it for granted that they can show up any time they like. They bring boyfriends over, talk on the phone and stay out forever.

I enjoy having my friends here sometimes— it makes the place feel comfortable and warm— but this is my home, not a party house. I was old enough to move out on my own, so why can’t I seem to ask my friends to respect my privacy?

Joan

Mr Edward’s reply to Joan

Joan:

If your family didn’t pay attention to your needs when you were a child, you probably have trouble letting others know your needs now.

And if you’ve gathered your friends around you to rebuild a happy family atmosphere, you may fear that saying no will bring back the kind of conflict you grew up with— or destroy the nice atmosphere you now enjoy. You need to understand that in true friendship it’s okay to put your own needs first from time to time.

Be clear about the message you want to send. For example, “I really love your company but I also need some privacy. So please call before you come over.” 60. We can learn from the first letter that Joan . A. lives away from her parents B. takes pride in her friends C. knows Mr Edward quite well D. hates her parents very much

A. Joan considers her friends more important than her privacy. B. Joan’s friends visit her more often than she can accept. C. Joan dislikes the boyfriends her friends bring over. D. Joan doesn’t like the parties at all.

62. According to Mr Edward, why can’t Joan tell her friends her feelings?

A. She does not put her needs first. B. She is afraid of hurting her friends. C. She does not understand true friendship. D. Her family experience stops her from doing so. 63. The second letter suggests that Mr Edward . A. is worried about Joan’s problem B. warns Joan not to quarrel with her friends C. advises Joan on how to refuse people D. encourages Joan to be brave enough

I know what you’re thinking:pizza? For breakfast? But the truth is that you can have last night’s leftovers in the a. m. if you want to.

I know lots of women who skip breakfast, and they have a ton of different excuses for doing it. Some say they don’t have time, others think they’re “saving” calories, still others just don’t like breakfast food.

But the bottom line is that eating in the morning is very important when you’re trying to lose weight. “Eating just about anything from 300 to 400 calories would be better than nothing at all,”says Katherine Brooking, R. D.,who developed the super-easy eating plan for this year’s“SELF CHALLENGE”. And even pizza can be healthy if it’s loaded with vegetables, and you stick to one small piece.

Breakfast is one meal I never miss, and the same goes for most weight loss success stories. Research shows that eating breakfast keeps you from overeating later in the day. Researchers at the University of Southern California found that breakfast skippers have a bigger chance of gaining weight than those who regularly have a morning meal.

So eat something in the morning, anything. I know plenty of friends who end up having no breakfast altogether, and have just coffee or orange juice. I say, try heating up last night’s leftovers-it may sound crazy, but if it works for you, do it! I find if I tell myself', “You can always eat it tomorrow, ” I put away the leftovers instead of eating more that night. Try it…you may save yourself some pre-bedtime calories. And watch your body gain the fat-burning effects. 64. The word “leftovers” in Paragraph 1 probably means __________.
