Context: Unit 11 Title: New business

A recent TV ad for an airline shows an executive receiving an e-mailed presentation from a potential supplier and then quickly forgetting about it when anther potential partner walks into the room and gives his presentation in person. The ad is trying to persuade business people of the merits of face-to-face contact in drumming up new business. Flying to meeintgs is still the preferred way of doing things: companies worldwide spend $3 billion on video-conferencing equipment every year, but US companies alone spend $410 billion a year on a business travel. Road warriors (even if they often travel by plane) willl probably be necessary to gain new business for some time to come.

PROCEDURES

Lesson 1 Starting up

Ss discuss some ideas to encourage people to start new business and give examples of companies in different sectors. Vocabulary: Economic terms

Ss look at words used to describe an economy and put them into practice. Listening: Starting new businesses

Ss listen to a conslultant giving advice about starting a new business.

The Sicilian city of Catania has been successful in attracting new electronics businesses. The article looks at some of the reasons for this.

Ss look at clauses with when, while, before, after, until and as soon as.

Ss pratice using numbers, fractions, decimals and amounts of money.

A US clothing company wants to build a factory overseas. Ss analyse the economics of four countries and propose the best place to build the factory.

Context: Unit 12 Title: Products

When we think of business, we usually think of tangible products that we can see and touch: computers on the desk or cars in the showroom. We may also think of primary products like coal or agricultural goods. But manufacturing forms a diminishing part of most advanced economies: only 17 percent of the US economy, for esample. What manufacturing there is increasingly lean with ‘Japanese’ techniques such as just-in-time (JIT) ordering of components and total quality management (TQM) becoming widespread.

PROCEDURES

Lesson 1 Starting up

Ss talk about products that they like and their attitudes to companies that make products.

Vocabulary: Describing products

Ss look at some adjectives that can be used to describe products. Listening: Best buys

Ss listen to five people talk about their best purchases.

Lesson 2 Reading: Launching a new product

Ss read about the marketing of a new type of kiwifruit.
