This morning, I got up late and ate breakfast hurriedly. I had never been late and didn’t want my boss to be unsatisfied. However, it seemed that the day wasn’t a lucky one for me from the very second I left my flat. The moment I wanted to rush downstairs, one of my stiletto heels (细高跟) broke. I had to return to change my red shoes. I also had to change my purse and other little things that I had tried to match with the shoes. I was sure I would be late for work.

On my way to work I had to wait for over half an hour because of an accident. I had no choice but to wait. I phoned my boss and he told me that it was no problem, but he needed me for the meeting with the Japanese clients (客户) that morning.

Finally, I arrived at the office one hour later. I had to keep calm and be fresh for the meeting to make the clients sure that our plan was the best for their future commercial project. However, I left the plan I had made the night before at home and was going to present (介绍) it to the clients. I was about to get angry when I realized that I had a draft (草稿) of it in my office.

At last, the presentation came to an end and it turned out to be a success. But I have to say that I had a terrible day, full of incidents.

Recently, a survey of 8,000 young people has been shown in the Journal of Health and Social Behavior that although love can make adults live healthily and happily, it is a bad thing for young people. Puppy love (早恋) may bring stress for young people and can lead to depression (沮丧,不振). The study shows that girls become more depressed than boys, and younger girls are the worst of all.

The possible reason for the connection between love and higher risk of depression for girls is “loss of self”. According to the study, even though boys would say “lose themselves in a romantic relationship”, this “loss of self” is much more likely to lead to depression when it happens to girls. Young girls who have romantic relationships usually like hiding their feelings and opinions. They won’t tell that to their parents.

Dr. Marian Kaufman, an expert on young people problems, says 15% to 20% young people will have depression during their growing. Trying romance often causes the depression. She advises kids not to jump into romance too early. During growing up, it is important for young people to build strong friendships and a strong sense of self. She also suggests the parents should encourage their kids to keep close to their friends, attend more interesting school activities and spend enough time with family.

Parents should watch for signs of depression—eating or mood changes —and if they see signs from their daughters or sons, they need to give help. The good news is that the connection between romance and depression seems to become weak with age. Love will always make us feel young, but only maturity gives us a chance to avoid its bad side effects.

63. Which of the following is more likely to have depression? A. Young people who have a strong sense of selfishness. B. Careless parents whose children are deep in love. C. Young girls who always hide their feelings and opinions. D. Young boys whose parents watch for their behavior. 64. What can be inferred from the passage?

A. Early love makes young people keep close to their friends and parents. B. Parents should help their children to be aware of the signs of depression. C. The older a woman is, the less likely she seems to lose herself in romance. D. Lacking love can lead young people to grow up more quickly. 65.What’s the main idea of the passage? A. Romance is a two edged sword for adults. B. Romance is good for young people.

C. Parents should forbid their children’s love. D. Puppy love may bring young people depression.

Treat yourself. You can easily get tired by sitting through an hour or two of homework without stopping. Once you finish homework for a subject, take a small break. Just make sure it’s quick (no more than 15 minutes). Do not turn on the TV, or you’ll never go back and finish your homework. 70
