You see, in America many people often spend their free time sitting on a couch(沙发) watching TV. As there are many channels to choose, the TV can be quite interesting and very addictive(上瘾的). For hundreds of years the British people have remembered their mothers on Mothering Sunday. In the old days, people had time-off from work to visit their mothers.
Today most people in Britain call Mothering Sunday Mother’s day. Children send Mother’s Day cards and presents to their mothers. Father and children do all the cooking and housework to give mothers a rest. In the USA, mothers are remembered on Mother’s Day, too. But it started quite differently from the way it started in Britain. In the 1860s there was a terrible war in the USA between the North and the South. In a small town, half of the people fought on the northern side, and half fought on the southern side. At the end of the war, the people hated each other. Mrs. Jarvis wanted the people to make friends with each other again. So she started “Mother’s Friendship Day”. On that day, she visited all the other mothers in her town and said, “Let’s be friends with each other again.”
Her idea succeeded. Soon all the women in the USA followed her example. After she died, her daughter
carried on the same idea, but she called it Mother’s Day. The first Mother’s Day was in 1908. In 1914 Mother’s Day, the second Sunday in May, became a public holiday. On that day, every public building in the USA flies the American national flag.

What is language for? Some people seem to think it’s for practicing grammar rules and learning lists of words—the longer the lists, the better. That’s wrong. Language is for the exchange(交流) of ideas and information. It’s meaningless knowing all about a language if you can’t use it
freely. Many students I have met know hundreds of grammar rules, but they can’t speak correctly or fluently(流利地). They are afraid of making mistakes. One shouldn’t be afraid of making mistakes when speaking a foreign language. Native speakers make mistakes and break rules, too. Bernard Saw once wrote, “Foreigners often speak English too correctly. ” But the mistakes that native
speakers make are different from those that Chinese students make. They’re English mistakes in the English language. And if enough native speakers break a rule, it is no longer a rule. What used to be wrong becomes right. People not only make history, they make language. But a people can only make its own language. It can’t make another people’s language. So Chinese students of English should pay attention to grammar, but they shouldn’t overdo(做过头) it. They should put communication(交际) first.
68. Language is used to _____. A. express oneself B. practise grammar rules C. talk with foreigners only D. learn lists of words
69. Generally, when an American or an Englishman speaks English, he____. A. never makes mistakes B. often makes mistakes
C. can’t avoid making mistakes D. always makes mistakes
70. “Foreigners often speak English too correctly. ” This sentence means that _____. A. foreigners speak correct English
