【简析】本句从句中以含否定意义的连词No sooner… than，所以从句的主语和谓语要 倒装。

【译文】这意味着他刚习惯了一套日常工作安排，就得改变为另一套，因此他的大量时 间都在既不能高效率地工作也不能很好地睡眠中度过。

第七节 否定句结构

在英语中，有些句子尽管不长，也没有难词，但仍令人难以理解。如：A man can never have too many ties．这句话不是说“一个男人绝不

可要太多的领带”，而是“一个男人领带再多也不算多” 句中的 can not (never)．．．too．．．表 示 “it is impossible to overdo”。同样，\．” 若翻译成“所有英语教师都是没有经验的教师”就大错特错了。因为\为 部分否定，而不是完全否定。英语表达否定意义时，往往由于否定词、否定范围的不同而产 生意义上的变化，造成误解和句子翻译错误。又如：Don’t drink and drive．本句中，否定词 not 否定的只是 drive，意为：严禁酒后开车。再如：英语\ 却不能简单地译为：“他很不喜欢喝酒。”这句话的准确意义应该是“他不是很喜欢喝酒”。 英语的否定方式可分为部分否定、否定转移、全部否定、双重否定、间接否定、形式上 的否定表达意义上的肯定等。

【例 1】Not two native speakers of English speak it alike. 【简析】本句否定词否定的主语。

【译文】没有两个英国本国人所讲的英语语音语调上完全相同的。

【例 2】Neither believe nor reject anything because any other person has rejected or believed it. 【简析】在 not+verb+because 从句中，形式上否定的是谓语，实际上否定的是原因状语从句， 这在语法上称为否定转移(transferred negation)。

【译文】不要因为别人相信或拒绝了什么东西而去相信或拒绝它。

【例 3】We did not set up the corporation merely because we wanted to make money. 【简析】同上一句一样，本句的副词 not 否定的也是 because 引导的原因状语从句。 【译文】我们办公司不仅仅是为了赚钱。

【例 4】A book may be compared to your neighbor, if it be good, it cannot last too long; if bad, you cannot get rid of it too early.

【简析】否定结构 cannot…too 和 cannot…overdo 表示再…也不过分。如：It's never too old to learn. 活到老，学到老。You are never too careful.你怎么小心都不为过。 if it be good 相当于 If it is good be 常用于条件句中，较为正式。

【译文】一本书好比你的邻居，若是好书，读的时间再久也不嫌长；若是坏书，丢弃越早越 好。

【例 5】Every man is not polite, and all are not born gentleman.

【简析】含有“整体”“全部”意义的代词与否定词连用是，表示部分否定。 【译文】不见得人人都懂礼貌，也不见得人人生来都是君子。

【例 6】Opportunities come to all, but all are not ready for them when they come. 【简析】同上一句一样，本句也是部分否定。

【译文】机会是均等的，人人都有，但当机会来临的时候，并非所有人都已做好了准备。 【例 7】 The lecture was not instructive and interesting.

【简析】否定词与 and 连接的两个并列连词连用时，有时只表示部分否定，通常否定的是 and 后面的部分。例如：You can not eat your cake and have it.

【译文】讲座颇有教育意义，但不生动。（或：讲座没有做到既有教育意义又生动.） 【例 8】The lecture was not instructive or interesting.

【简析】如果否定词与 or 连接的两个并列连词连用时，句子就成了全部否定。 【译文】讲座既没有教育意义，又不生动。

【例 9】We did not see quiet light from Venus in the morning as well as in the evening. 【简析】否定词与 as well as 连接的两个并列结构连用时，否定词只是否定 as well as 之前 的部分，而对 as well as 后面部分则表示肯定。例如：Tom does not speak French as well as English.汤姆讲英语，但不讲法语。

【译文】晚上我们看到金星柔和的光芒，但在早晨，我们却看不到。 【例 10】It is not uncommon for a great scholar to be ignorant in everyday affairs.

【简析】本句是由否定词 not 加上否定前缀构成的双重否定。又如：I could not disobey him. 我是不得不服从他。

【译文】一个伟大的学者，在日常事务上无知，并非罕见。

【例 11】There is no question that we will finish the work within three days.

【简析】本句是由否定词 not 加上 含有否定意义的名词 question 构成的双重否定。双重否定， 除了用含否定意义的名词以外，还可以用含否定意义的动词，形容词和副词。如：He will never forget it.（他不会忘记的） You are not unaware of it.（你知道这件事。） 【译文】我们有把握在三天内完成这项工作。

【例 12】It not seldom happens that what seems to be an insurmountable difficulty is easily overcome by a young worker who has learned physics and mathematics in a spare-time evening school.

【简析】本句中否定词 not 和含否定意义的副词 seldom 构成双重否定。

【译文】常常发生这样的情况，似乎无法克服的困难，却轻易地被一个曾在业余夜校学过物 理和数学的青年工人克服了。

【例 13】He never comes but he brings something for her . 【简析】这是一个含否定词 but 否定句接连词 but 的双重否定句。 【译文】他来的时候没有一次不给他带些东西。

【例 14】There is no doubt but that science and technology will develop faster and faster. 【简析】but that 前面含有否定意义的词 doubt, question, wonder, deny 等词时，but that 相当 于连接词 that。此时，but that 不再含有否定意义。又如：I do not doubt but that it was he who had leaked the information.我从不怀疑是他走漏了消息。 【译文】毋庸置疑科学技术会发展得越来越快。

【例 15】Adult education programs must not be designed without the diverse needs of the participants in mind.

【简析】本句是由否定词 not 和否定介词构成的双重否定。 【译文】制定成人教育大纲时不能不考虑参加者不同的需要。 【例 16】In that village there is no one but knows the doctor.

【简析】本句是由否定词加 but 构成的双重否定。这里的 but 意思是“除了”。又如：There is no man but errors.一个人难免要犯错误。除了否定词 but 外，还可以用 except，例如:She doesn’t do anything except looking after her baby. 他除了照看婴儿以外，什么也不干。 【译文】那个村子里没有一个人不认识这位医生的。

【例 17】Man in general does not appreciate what he has until he loses it. 【简析】本句是由否定词 not 加否定连词 unless 构成的双重否定。 【译文】一般人要等到失去所有才知道珍惜。

【例 18】Not many people would not be chastened by the certainty of impending death. 【简析】本句是由否定词 not 连用构成的双重否定。

【译文】大多数人都因为不可避免的死亡即将来临而循规蹈矩。

【例 19】They cannot choose but admit that in certain aspects of science and technology we are away ahead of them.

【简析】本句中 they cannot choose but也是双重否定。有时 choose还可以省略。又如：we cannot (choose) but read books to increase our knowledge. 我们不得不读书已增长知识。 【译文】他们不得不承认在某些科学技术方面我们远远地走在他们的前面。 【例 20】There is no rule but has exception.

【简析】在双重否定句型中，but 可以是代词。又如：There is no man but has his faults.世人 皆有过。There is no one but hopes to be rich.没有人不想发财。 【译文】有规则就有例外。

【例 21】Significant deviation from these growth rates appear to indicate abnormal development. 【简析】本句形式上是肯定句，但意义上是个否定句。又如：Failure to answer the questions they asked made the police suspect him.他回答不出警察们提出的问题，所以引起了警察的怀疑。 【译文】这些成长速度与众不同，它显示出现了异常的发育。

【例 22】There are some people who feel pride, instead of shame, in their ignorance or scanty knowledge of our own history.

【简析】这也是一个含蓄否定句，instead of， ignorance 形式上是肯定，意义上都可以理解 成否定。

【译文】有些人对于自己的历史一点儿都不懂，或懂得很少，不以为耻，反以为荣。 【例 23】Such a chance was denied to me. 【简析】本句也可以说成：I was denied such a chance. 【译文】我可得不到这样的机会。
