Unit 5 making an appointment

约会

约会：是预约会面的一种，原指预先约定时间地点会面的活动。约会可指一般人士的预约会面，我们用短语“make an appointment”，也常指一男一女谈恋爱，我们用“date”。

不速之客通常是不受欢迎的。人们习惯先打电话约会，然后按约好的时间、地点见面。一旦约会已定，就应严格遵守，准时赴约。如果遇到堵车等意外情况，有可能迟到或无法赴约，应设法尽早通知对方，并表示歉意。独立生活的子女与父母之间也是如此。比如儿子临时路过父母家，他会在附近先打个电话，询问父母此刻是否方便。如果回答是”NO“，他会毫不在意地驾车而去；反过来也是如此。如果是去亲朋好友家过圣诞节，在约会之时，千万别忘了问清他家里将有哪些人，包括客人的情况。因为，你应该为他们每一个人准备一份礼物。他的客人也许是第一次见你，但是他也会为你准备一件小礼物的。

1 在西方国家，办一件事，见一个人，常常需要事先约好。无论是去医院看医生，还是在学校请教授审阅作文，都要这样。

2 预约的方式很多，可以写信 、打电话或亲自前往。值得注意的是，预约时话要讲得简明扼要，不要为了训练口语而说个没完，这样一来会领对方感到厌烦。

3 有时候，在约好时间以后，由于难以预料的事情，无法如期赴约，理应及时告知对方，以便对方修订计划。取消原来的约会时，先应表示歉意，如：I’m very sorry I have to call off the appointment tomorrow morning.然后再说明其理由。

4 西方国家的人时间观念较强，约会时一般要准时。但如是约你去吃饭，则最好是在约好的时间后1－5分钟内到达。

5 赴约：美国人会常说「随时来找我」，有些邀约是相当诚恳的，但拜访前仍应事先电话连系，确定时间，以免自己的「随时」而造成别人的不便。若接到正式的邀约，请柬上倘印有「R.S.V.P.」，去与不去必需电话通知。大型活动请柬通常印有 Regrets only，此时只有不参加时才须通知。若没有赴约把握不要轻意应允；若临时不克赴约，务请电话通知。有任何饮食禁忌可先告知。特殊的文化风俗和饮食禁忌可得谅解和尊重。如果应邀参加家庭聚会，可问主人需要什么礼物，即使主人婉谢，届时仍可带瓶酒或一束鲜花，或酌带一些具有中国风味的小礼物。除非事先言明，一般聚会活动以不带小孩参加为宜，如果聚会性质为野餐烤肉，则大都可全家参加。宴后三四天内别忘记寄一张感谢卡或谢函给主人，若在主人家过夜
