Unit 5 making an appointment
约会
约会:是预约会面的一种,原指预先约定时间地点会面的活动。约会可指一般人士的预约会面,我们用短语“make an appointment”,也常指一男一女谈恋爱,我们用“date”。
不速之客通常是不受欢迎的。人们习惯先打电话约会,然后按约好的时间、地点见面。一旦约会已定,就应严格遵守,准时赴约。如果遇到堵车等意外情况,有可能迟到或无法赴约,应设法尽早通知对方,并表示歉意。独立生活的子女与父母之间也是如此。比如儿子临时路过父母家,他会在附近先打个电话,询问父母此刻是否方便。如果回答是”NO“,他会毫不在意地驾车而去;反过来也是如此。如果是去亲朋好友家过圣诞节,在约会之时,千万别忘了问清他家里将有哪些人,包括客人的情况。因为,你应该为他们每一个人准备一份礼物。他的客人也许是第一次见你,但是他也会为你准备一件小礼物的。
1 在西方国家,办一件事,见一个人,常常需要事先约好。无论是去医院看医生,还是在学校请教授审阅作文,都要这样。
2 预约的方式很多,可以写信 、打电话或亲自前往。值得注意的是,预约时话要讲得简明扼要,不要为了训练口语而说个没完,这样一来会领对方感到厌烦。
3 有时候,在约好时间以后,由于难以预料的事情,无法如期赴约,理应及时告知对方,以便对方修订计划。取消原来的约会时,先应表示歉意,如:I’m very sorry I have to call off the appointment tomorrow morning.然后再说明其理由。
4 西方国家的人时间观念较强,约会时一般要准时。但如是约你去吃饭,则最好是在约好的时间后1-5分钟内到达。
5 赴约:美国人会常说「随时来找我」,有些邀约是相当诚恳的,但拜访前仍应事先电话连系,确定时间,以免自己的「随时」而造成别人的不便。若接到正式的邀约,请柬上倘印有「R.S.V.P.」,去与不去必需电话通知。大型活动请柬通常印有 Regrets only,此时只有不参加时才须通知。若没有赴约把握不要轻意应允;若临时不克赴约,务请电话通知。有任何饮食禁忌可先告知。特殊的文化风俗和饮食禁忌可得谅解和尊重。如果应邀参加家庭聚会,可问主人需要什么礼物,即使主人婉谢,届时仍可带瓶酒或一束鲜花,或酌带一些具有中国风味的小礼物。除非事先言明,一般聚会活动以不带小孩参加为宜,如果聚会性质为野餐烤肉,则大都可全家参加。宴后三四天内别忘记寄一张感谢卡或谢函给主人,若在主人家过夜
通常感谢卡寄给女主人。

A: All right. What time exactly? B: I suppose you could come at three. A: Good. Sorry to trouble you. B: No trouble at all.
