16.admire vt.赞美;钦佩;羡慕 admire sb for/in sth因某事而钦佩某人 admiration n. in admiration of对……表示钦佩;have great admiration for sb 十分钦佩某人;in/with admiration心怀钦佩地 (1)I admire him for his success in business.

(2)The school is widely admired for its excellent teaching. (3)She is full of admiration for the head and teachers. (4)He was lost in admiration of the beauty of the scene.

17.energetic adj.充满活力的;精力充沛的;积极的 energetically adv. energy n.精力;力气;活动力;能力 (1)He had worked energetically all day on his new book. (2)He devoted his energies to the reformation of science.

18.look forward to 期望;期待;盼望 object to 反对 be /get used to ;be accustomed to 习惯于;devote…to献身于 lead to 导致 refer to 参考;指 stick to 坚持 (1)We are all looking forward to our holiday.

(2)I object to such treatment/to being treated like this.

(3)He has got used to getting up early,even in cold winter months. (4)Everyone should get accustomed to slower growth. (5)She has devoted herself to the medical science.

(6)Such a mistake would perhaps lead to disastrous(灾难惨重的)consequences. (7)The new law does not refer to land used for farming. (9)If you stick to the truth, you’ve nothing to fear.

19.as though/as if 好像一般从句用虚拟语气;如果表述的情况接近真实,也可不用虚拟语气。 (1)She behaved as though nothing had happened. (2)It seemed as if the world was at an end. (3)It looks as though our team is going to win.

20.have fun with和……玩得开心 for fun/in fun 取乐;闹着玩 it is fun to do/it is fun doing sth 做某事很有趣 be full of fun 很好玩,极有趣

(1)The game will be full of fun. I can’t wait to join in the fun.

(2)Don’t be angry;I only said so for fun. (3)It is fun to watch a close football match.

(4)What fun it is to have a cold drink on such a hot day.

21.rather than 并列连词“是;而不是;与其……不如……”如果连接两个词做主语,谓语动词与其前面的词保持人称和数的一致。rather than 可以连接形容词、介词、动名词、分句、不定式、动词等,但如果后接不定式可以把to省略。但位于句首只能接不带to的不定式。would/had rather do than do;would like to do rather than do;would do rather than do;prefer to do rather than do固定用法“宁愿……而不愿……” or rather 更确切地说 (1)He is a teacher rather than an actor.

(2)You rather than she are going to see National Day parade. (3)He is young rather than handsome.

(4)He is lying in the bed rather than on the ground. (5)She enjoys swimming rather than walking on a hot day. (6)It was what he meant rather than what he said.

(7)Rather than have the radio repaired, he’d like to buy a new one. (8)She would rather watch TV than go to the cinema. (9)John, rather than his roommates, is to blame. (10).We should help him rather than he should help us.

(11)Rather than work in such bad conditions, he would like to give up. (12)Which would you rather have,tea or coffee?

(13)I’d rather you came tomorrow than today.(我宁愿你明天来而不是今天 注意针对现在的虚拟用一般过去时) (14)I would rather you didn’t do it.我宁愿你没干那事。 (15)He worked late last night, or rather early this morning.

(16)We went by sea,but I would rather have gone by air.(后面接have done) (17)I would rather have stayed there last night.(实际上那天晚上没有呆在那) (18)Age brings wisdom but I would rather have youth and stupidity.

(19)We went by sea but I ‘d rather we had gone by air.(同义句:请注意与16句的区别,本句接句子;后者接have done)

(20)I’d rather she sat next to me.

(21)Kaven went by car and I’d rather she hadn’t.

(22)My wife would rather we didn’t see each other anymore. (23)I would go to work by bike rather than by bus.(注意不要省略by)

22. however adv. conj.可以引导让步状语从句,或修饰形容词或副词 “无论多么=no matter how;可是,仍然,但是;究竟怎样,到底以什么方式=how ever;无论以何种方式,不管怎样” (1)However cold it is, he always goes swimming.

(2)However big the fool, there is always a bigger fool to admire him. (3)My room is small;however, it’s comfortable. (4)He said it was so; he was mistaken,however. (5)However did you get here without a car? (6)However it may be,I shall take your word. (7)However hard I worked, she was never satisfied.

23.fool n.愚人;白痴;受骗者 v. 愚弄;欺骗;干傻事;开玩笑 adj.傻的;愚蠢的 foolish adj.笨的;荒谬的 make a fool of sb愚弄某人;April Fool’s Day 愚人节 fool sb into doing sth 欺骗某人做某事 fool around 闲荡,游手好闲 be fooled by sb上某人的当

(1)I was meant to be working on Sunday,but I just fooled around all day.(be meant to=ought to=be supposed to) (2)I didn’t want him to look foolish and be laughed at.

(3)He that walks with wise men shall be wise, but a companion of fools shall be destroyed. (4)You can’t fool me!I don’t believe you. (5)He is so fool that we can’t believe him.

(6)I just stood there feeling foolish and watching him. (7)As is often the case, nobody likes being made a fool of. (8)What a fool she had been to think that he would stay!

24.permission n. 许可;允许; 许可证;书面许可; permit vt. vi. 允许;许可;容许 n. 执照;许可证 permit作名词,指准予某事发生的官方文件,尤指有期限的,如:停车、居住、驾照、钓鱼许可证;permission 用作可数名词时侧重“书面的许

可” permit/allow doing permit/allow sb to do sth with one’s permission without permission ask sb for permission give sb permission to do sth

(1)She took the car without permission. (2)Did he give you permission to take that?

(3)They have got the oil exploration permission at that area. (4)Will they permit you to sit in on a few classes? (5)She hasn’t got a work permit.

(6)I don’t permit sleeping during the class.

25.turn up出现;到场; 开大音量;好转;找到,发现 turn on 打开 turn off关上 turn down 关小音量;拒绝 turn into变成turn out结果 turn over 翻转;交给 turn to 求助于

(1)He promised to come at seven, but he has not turned up yet. (2)Bill would turn up the TV in the other room. (3)Could you do me a favor and turn the music down? (4)I would appreciate it if you would turn off that light. (5)The road conditions there turned out to be very good. (6)It could well turn into some kind of a media circus.

(7)If you turn the box over, you’ll see some words at the bottom of it. (8)Don’t hesitate to turn to us if you are in difficulty.

(9)Parents can programme the machine not to turn on at certain times.

26.keep one’s word 守信用;履行诺言 break one’s word/promise; have a word with sb; have words with sb;in other words=that is to say ;in a word=in short;leave word留言 word came that…有消息说 (1)You promised to take the children camping,so you must keep your word. (2)You may depend upon him,for he is a person who always keeps his word.

(3)In a word, it is difficult to know what to do,in any culture,without watching,listening and asking a lot of questions. 27.hold one’s breath 屏息,屏气 lose one’s breath ;take a deep breath;out of breath; breathe v. (1)He held his breath while the results were read out.
