Lesson 9 - A cold welcome

一、教学重点

1、On Wednesday evening, we went to the Town Hall.

在具体的某一天前要用介词on。

2、A large crowd of people had gathered under the Town Hall clock. a large crowd of... 一大群?。 under 在?的下面

gather 聚集。例句：Please gather round. The tour guide gathered the visitors in the lobby. 3、It would strike twelve in twenty minutes' time.

strike 钟声敲打，后面直接加时刻。（on strike 罢工）

in + 时间段：表示再过多长时间，多久之后。例句：I’ll be back in a moment. 4、Fifteen minutes passed and then, at five to twelve, the clock stopped.

引入话题： Today’s story took place on the last evening of the year in a small town. 今天的小故事发生在一个小镇上，时间是某一年的最后一天。Listen to the audio and try to understand the main idea of the story. 。。。。Now, let’s look at the title. 下面让我们再来看一下课文的标题：A cold welcome. 实际上，这个标题有双重含义（double meaning）：①It was December, and it was cold.②The clock stopped as it refused to welcome the new year. 一方面是天气的确很冷，另一方面是大钟好像不愿意迎接新年的到来。 pass 过去，经过【回顾Lesson 3】注意区分：passed [v.] VS past [prep.]

例句：He passed though the hall. He walked past the hall. pass 传递。例句：Pass the salt for me, please.

“, at five to twelve,”插入语。表达时刻：at half past ten, at a quarter to eleven, at two to two 5、The big minute hand did not move.

refuse to do sth. = be unwilling to do sth. 拒绝做某事。

refuse sth. 拒绝什么。例句：He refused my request politely. 10、At that moment, everybody began to laugh and sing. at that moment = at that time = just then

begin to do sth. = start to do sth. 开始做某事。

四、总结与练习 1、文化背景：

课文的倒数第二句用了拟人的手法，看得出来：The clock was in a bad humor. 大钟那天心情不好。但是镇上的人们并没有受到影响。They were still cheerful. 大家知道英国诗人Rupert Brooke（鲁伯特·布鲁克）么？他参加了第一次世界大战并且因为感染肺炎而死在了远征的途中。他曾写过两句诗也提到了一个停止不走的钟：Stands the church clock at ten to three, is there honey still for tea? 教堂的钟停止了两点五十分，喝茶的时候还有蜂蜜吗？这两行诗之所以很有名，是因为它表现了英国乡村的宁静生活，与第一次世界大战的背景形成巨大反差。Rupert Brooke来着剑桥附近的一个村庄，如果你现在去他的家乡的话呢，还能看见那个教堂的钟，它仍旧停在两点五十分。 2、表达时间的介词：

① at：时刻（at 6 o’clock, at half past one）；正午、午夜（at noon, at night/midnight） ② on：具体日期（on April 20th, on tomorrow morning）、星期几（on Sunday） ③ in：月份（in April）、季节（in Spring）、年（in 2010）；
