Dear Sir / Madam,
It worried me a lot when I heard of the plan to cut down St John's Wood to make a car park for shoppers. Although I agree that the town is short of car parks, this idea would be improper.
In the first place, the wood is an area of natural beauty. There are many ancient trees of an unusual kind. I often go there for a picnic or just to relax at weekends. The wood is, without doubt, a natural home for birds, animals and insects. If the trees were cut down, many species would be lost. Furthermore, the wood is right in the centre of a heavily polluted (污染) part of town. The trees help to make the air cleaner. The council (地方议会) says they are worried about global warming, yet they wish to cut down trees which help reduce the build-up of gases that lead to global warming because they feed on carbon dioxide. Besides, that area also suffers from high noise levels from passing trucks and the railway line. The trees help reduce the noise levels and do a lot of good to the whole environment.
In my opinion, cutting down the wood would be stupid and pointless. A car park may well attract shoppers to the town and increase the shopkeepers' trade. However, a beautiful part of our town would be destroyed. I would be very interested in hearing what your other readers think.
Yours faithfully, Roland Chang

Ross Griffiths woke up one morning aged 16 months unable to speak. This five-year-old boy was only two weeks ago diagnosed (诊断) with a condition so unusual that it hasn't been named and is instead known as 15q11.2.
Ross Griffiths has struggled to get back his communication skills, but has always been too shy to use his sign language away from home and school. But after seeing a video of Middlesbrough's Cleveland Centre Father Christmas signing with three-year-old Mali Williams, Ross told his mum that he wanted to sign with Father Christmas, too.
Ross and his family went to see Father Christmas yesterday, along with Mali, who was invited back for a second visit. Father Christmas set up the special second meeting with Mali where he gave her a lovely doll.
As crowds of children and parents awaited the arrival of the big man at the shopping centre, Father Christmas took some time out before his duties to meet again with Mali and with Ross before going on to see all the other children.
Ross's mum Becky Lane hoped that a visit to the special Father Christmas would help Ross get over his shyness. The Father Christmas everyone believes in even learned Makaton specially for his meeting with Ross, as this is the communication method the young boy uses.
“He was too frightened to use his sign language outside the house, but when he saw the video of the girl signing with Father Christmas, it showed him he didn't have to be shy. He did really well. And he got a PacMan game as a gift. Now he's not a shy boy any more,” Becky said.

27. What does the underlined word “Makaton” most probably refer to? A. A form of signing. B. A foreign language. C. A Christmas song. D. A kind of dance.

I was on an amazing trip with my wife, following Marco, our guide to experience the festival of Qoyllur Rit'i which takes place at 4,300 metres in the southern Andes of Peru, a festival which few foreign tourists ever get to see.
People were travelling to this festival from all over Peru. Among them there were old men, mothers with small babies and children all following the same route. Many of them had horses to carry their food, blankets and tents. Some, like us, had come by bus to Mahuayani, the nearest town, and were walking up from there. We continued climbing for another hour and a half before reaching the Sinakara valley. There we looked down on a flat plain of open grassland. Right across this flat piece of ground people were putting up tents of blue plastic to protect themselves from the rain. Marco chose a spot to put up our tent.
Not far away in an open market, people were buying tiny houses, cars or small pictures showing a baby or something else. Marco explained that these represented something the pilgrims (朝圣者) wanted. They would take them and bury them in the mountain. This, they believed, would make sure that what they wished for would come true in the year to come.
After dinner we went to bed fully clothed inside our sleeping bags. We were up early the next morning, the main day of the festival. The ukukus, men wearing black masks (面罩) and bright costumes, had left their tents in the early hours to climb the nearest mountain by the light of the full moon. They stopped to dance from time to time, believing this would bring luck to their villages. As they came down, they were joined by groups of dancers in traditional costumes. They performed wherever there was a space. Although there did not seem to be anyone organising them, the whole festival had become a huge harmonious (和谐的) celebration. 29. Who might be the author of the text? A. A tour guide. B. A schoolboy. C. A native of Peru. D. A foreign traveller.
