6.西湖 West Lake
西湖在杭州市区(the western urban area of the Hangzhou city)的西部,面积约6.03平方公里,其中,水面积5.2平方公里,湖岸周长15公里。Situated/Located/Lying in the west of Hangzhou, the West Lake covers an area of 6.03 square kilometers, with a water area of 5.2 square kilometers and a circumference of 15 kilometers. 湖面上有白、苏二堤,将湖面分成外湖、里湖、岳湖、西里湖、小南湖五个部分。The lake is divided by Su and Bai causeways into five sections: Outer Lake, Inner Lake, Yue Lake, West Inner Lake and Small South Lake; 湖中有孤山、小瀛洲、湖心亭、阮公墩四岛。环湖的山峰外观秀丽挺拔,势若骏马奔腾。and there are four islands, namely, Solitary Island, Little Yingzhou (three pools mirroring the Moon”), Mid-Lake Pavilion and Ruan-gong Mound. With flowers and trees thriving along the lake and happy rivers and brooks running among the mountains, plus numerous pavilions, the chanting charm of the west lake attracts countless tourists all the year round, making it a paradise of the mortal world.
7. 西安Xi’an
西安在古代称为长安,现在是陕西省省会,是我国西北最大的城市。西安总面积是2295平方公里,有三百多万人口。
Xi’an, also called Chang’an in ancient times, is the provincial capital of Shaanxi Province and the largest city in northwest China. It covers a total area of 2,295 square kilometers with a population of more than 3,000,000.
西安已有三千多年历史。在1100年的时间里,断断续续有11个朝代在这里建都。Xi’an as a city dates back to more than 3,000 years ago. In a period of more than 1100 years, Xi’an/It had once served intermittently as the capital of eleven dynasties. 西安作为举世闻名的丝绸之路的起点,从汉朝起,就成了中国与外部世界经济、文化交流的中心。As the starting point of the world famous “Silk Road”, Xi’an became, from the Han Dynasty, the hub of economic and cultural interflow between China and the outside world.
到了西安,很多游客都会选择游览钟楼和大雁塔两大景点。Many tourists to Xi’an like to visit two spots: the Bell Tower and Great Gander Pagoda /Greater Wild Goose Pagoda.

建造的。Bell Tower was first built in 1384 and then moved to the very center of Xi’an in 1582. The whole structure, 36 meters in height, is built of brick and wood. 过去钟楼上悬挂着一口铁铸的大钟,每天报时,故名钟楼。There used to be a huge iron bell hung/hanging in the tower for reporting time every day. Hence the name Bell Tower.
大雁塔坐落在西安市以南四公里的慈恩寺内。此塔是在唐朝著名的僧人玄奘建议下修建的,用来保存他从印度带回的佛经。Great Gander Pagoda stands in the grounds of Ci’en Temple (the Temple of Maternal Grace) about 4 kilometers south of Xi’an. The Pagoda was built at the suggestion of Xuanzang, the/a famous monk of the Tang Dynasty to safe-keep the Buddhist scriptures he brought back from India. 于652年修建的最早的大雁塔仅有5层,现在的塔是7层,62米高,形状大致象个伸长了的方型金字塔。The original pagoda, built in 652, had only five stories. The present one stands 64 meters tall with seven tiers, roughly in the shape of an elongated square pyramid.
8. 画蛇添足The “Finishing” Touch
楚有祠者,赐其舍人卮酒。舍人hangers-on/retainer/trencherman/clansman相谓曰:“数人饮之不足,一人饮之有余,请画地为蛇,先成者饮酒。”In the state of Chu, an aristocrat, after offering sacrifices to his ancestors, bestowed a flask of wine on the gentlemen who worked for him, which started off a discussion among themselves.
“The wine is not enough for several yet adequate for one person. Let’s each draw a snake on the floor and the one that first finishes his drawing drinks the wine.”
一人蛇先成,引酒且饮之,乃左手持卮,右手画蛇,曰:“吾能为之足。”
A man finished his drawing first. He took the wine and was about to drink it when, with the flask in his left hand, he drew with his right hand, saying, “I can even add legs to my snake.”
未成,一人之蛇成,夺其卮曰:“蛇固无足,子安能为之足?”Before he finished/could get this done, another man had completed his drawing and snatched the flask from him./Hardly before he finished drawing the feet when another guy had got his work done./Why should you add feet for him?
“A snake does not have any legs. How could you add legs to it?” 遂饮其酒,为画足者,终亡其酒。
With these words he drank the wine. The one who added legs to the snake eventually lost his wine.(乔车洁铃 译) Notes:

A native of Chu after worshipping his ancestors gave his retainers a pot of wine.
One of the retainers said, “It’s insufficient for all of us, but too much for one of us. I suggest, therefore, that we draw snakes on the ground, and the one who first finishes

drawing the snake will win the pot of wine.”
When one retainer had completed his drawing, he took the pot to drink. As he held it in his left hand, he continued to draw the snake with his right hand, saying: “I can add feet to it.”
While he was adding feet to his snake, another man who had then drawn his snake snatched the pot from his hand, protesting: “No snake has feet. How can you add feet to it?”
Then he drank the wine. The man who added feet to the snake lost his prize at last. (钱歌川 译)
9. 狐假虎威Tiger in Tow
虎求百兽而食之,得狐。A starving tiger, on the hunt for animals to devour, caught a fox./ A tiger, in search of other animals for food, caught a fox, and was about to enjoy his meal.
狐曰:“子无敢食我也。天帝使我长百兽。“You cannot be so bold as to eat me,” said the fox, “I am sent by the heavenly god to rule over the animal kingdom./ The fox said, “You dare not eat me. I am sent by God to rule the animal kingdom.
今子食我,是逆天帝之命也。If you eat me you will be going against a heavenly mandate. 子以我为不信,吾为子先行,子随我后,观百兽之见我而不敢不走乎?”Do you think I am lying? Let me go first and you follow behind. We’ll see whether any animal is so brave as not to flee when they see me.”
虎以为然,故遂与之行。The tiger agreed to the plan and accordingly went with the fox. 兽见之皆走。虎不知兽畏己而走也,以为畏狐也。All the animals who saw them fled in no time. /Not an animal dare stay at the sight of them. /They all run away in full flight the first minute they saw the fox and the tiger. The tiger, under the false impression that they were afraid of the fox, was unaware that he himself was the cause of their flight./The tiger was convinced, fully unware that it was he himself, not the fox, who frightened the other animals into flight。 It never occurred to the tiger, even in his wildest dreams, that it was he himself who had frightened the other animals into full flight.
Version B
A tiger went about in search of other weaker animals for food. Once in his hunting, he happened to find a fox.
“You don’t dare to eat me,” said the fox, “as I am head of all animals appointed by God, it is against the will of God if you eat me now. In case you don’t believe what I say, let us go together, you just follow me as I go ahead to see if there is any animal that does not run away when I pass.”
The tiger agreed and went with the other.
Certainly he saw all the animals run away on seeing the fox.
He thought they were afraid of the fox without knowing that it was he himself that they

feared.

10. 郑人买履A Funny Shoe-Buyer
郑人有欲买履者,One day, a native of the State of Zheng wanted to buy a pair of shoes for himself.
先自度其足,而置之其坐。至之市,而忘操之Before he went to the market, he measured both of his feet carefully with a string. When he got to the shoe stand, he realized that he had forgotten having put the string on his seat immediately after the measurement.
已得履,谓曰:“吾忘持度。”With a pair of shoes in his hands, he said to the seller, “Sorry, I forgot to bring the size string.”
返归取之。及返,市罢,遂不得履。With those words, he began to head home for the string. When he hurried back with the string, the market was almost empty and he could buy no shoes.
人曰:“何不试之以足?”“Why not try on the shoes with your feet?” asked a man on the street. 曰:“宁信度,无自信也。“I’d rather believe in the string,” he answered.
