Lunchtime was my favorite subject when I was at school. I was really good at it. I loved school lunches.

It may seem it would be hard to harm(损害) the air. Actually, it is something we have to be very careful about.

Most of the earth’s creatures need to breathe(呼吸) O2. O2. is healthy and does not have a smell. But ozone(臭氧) that is close to the ground is not healthy. It is not safe for us to breathe. It smells as if something were burning. It is known as air pollution, and it harms our eyes and lungs (肺).

Ozone is also found high above the earth. It is called the ozone layer (臭氧层). It is not pollution up there. It is a good kind of ozone because it keeps the UV rays (紫外线) of the sun away from us. These UV rays are bad for our eyes and skin. They also harm plants and small animals on the earth. The ozone layer acts just like a pair of sunglasses. It keeps things safe from the sun' s UV rays.

There is some bad news about the ozone layer, though. Scientists have found a big hole in it over the South Pole(南极). This was caused by air pollution that should not be up there. The pollution rose high into the air from the earth. The ozone layer was not able to close up like it should, so a large hole developed. Now, more of the sun’s UV rays can get through to the earth.

Air pollution is bad to breathe, hurts our eyes, and harms the ozone layer. Everyone can do his or her part to stop air pollution and clean up the air.

If everyone tried to make less pollution, we could make the air cleaner. The hole in the ozone layer would get smaller, and the earth would be protected（保护）.
