Dear Li Hua,
I’m glad that you didn’t cheat in examinations. What you have done is right, even though your performance may not be so pleasing.
It is universally acknowledged that cheating in studies has bad effects on our personal development, which suggests our total lack of honesty. What some of your classmates did is completely wrong, despite the fact that they might feel self-satisfied with the minor false success. If they are not aware of their mistakes, they will undoubtedly lose in time. As for your parents, you might just as well share your ideas with them, trying to get their understanding and encouragement.
From my point of view, we are supposed to focus on adequate preparations before examinations. As you know, we take various examinations to test how well we have learned and then make necessary adjustments. Therefore, we can benefit more from honest scores rather than cheating in examinations. What does matter is that we should be brave to face setbacks and challenges.
To end this, I really hope that you will work hard and make scientific preparations in advance, and wish you every success in future.
Yours sincerely
Wang Lei

M: Oh, Lily! Could you help me with my maths tonight? The final exam is coming. My maths is very poor.
W: I’m afraid I couldn’t. You know, I’m busy with my paper these days. Text 2

W: How does this work?
M: It’s easy. I’ll show you. Turn the power on. Focus on the object. Now, press this button to shoot. OK. Look, what a nice picture. Text 3
W: It’s the weekend again. Do you have any plans for tonight? How about going dancing? M: Well, dancing is the last thing I want to do. Text 4
M: The tie is great. But thirty-five pounds is too much. I’ll offer you 20 pounds for it. W: No. It’s a bargain, I promise you. I suppose I can knock the five off. M: OK. I’ll take it. Text 5
M: Excuse me. My soup is cold and the bread is rather hard as well. W: Sorry, sir. I’ll bring you some new as soon as possible. Text 6
M: Auntie, your home is very close to the airport. It only takes twenty minutes to drive from the airport to your house.
W: Yes, it is very convenient. Let’s go inside and get something to eat. M: That sounds great. I’m really hungry. W: What would you like to eat? M: I would like some rice and …
W: You are in America now. You must be used to American food. How about eating some pizza? M: I think American pizza is different from Korean pizza. Anyway, I want to try American pizza. W: Jimmy will be coming home soon, so we should order two large pizzas. M: Who is Jimmy?
W: Jimmy is the American name of your cousin. M: Wow. I want an American name, too.
W: Your name is Su-mi. I’ll call you Sue. Sue is a good American name, and it sounds the same as the first part of Su-mi.
M: That’s great! But when we go back to Korea, I’m Su-mi again. Text 7
W: You want to see me, Mr. Wallace?
M: Yes, Laura. Please sit down. How are things going?
W: Quite well, thank you. My senior year is quite busy, but thankfully I’m managing. M: Oh, I wouldn’t say you are “managing”, Laura.
W: I beg your pardon, sir? To the best of my knowledge, I’m doing OK.
M: I’m sorry. What I mean is, you’re not just managing, Laura. You are doing much better than that. You are the best student in the high school. W: Oh, it’s very kind of you to say so.
M: Laura, you are such a polite, hardworking and helpful student. You have set a good example to everyone.
W: I don’t know what to say. I just try to do my best.
M: I know that, Laura. So let me explain why I asked you to come to see me. There will be a national conference in New York on May 5. That’s half a month from now. Our school has been invited to send one student. Would you like to go?
W: Me? Wow! I feel honored that you’ve asked me, Mr. Wallace. M: Well, you deserve the honor.
W: Thank you very much. This is so exciting! But before I decided, may I ask a couple of questions? M: Certainly. Text 8
W: Now that you are making more money, I think we need to make a new budget. M: OK, let’s talk about income first. With the raise, my income will be $3,000 a month. W: Great! And with my part-time job, I’m still making about $1,000 a month.
M: OK. That’s for income. The rent for our new apartment is going to be $1, 350 a month. Our gas and electricity bills will probably be around $100 a month. And for the phone, TV, and Internet, it’s about $100. How much do you spend on daily use each month? W: About $450. That shouldn’t change. Umm, what about the car?
M: Good news. We paid off the loan last month. Now we only need to pay for gas. W: Right. Let’s budget $150 for that.
M: OK. Well, it seems we’ve got some extra money. Let’s talk about how we use it. Text 9
M: Hello, Jane. This is Philip speaking.
W: Hi, how are you? Nice to hear your voice.
M: I remember you told me that you are interested in watching golf games. I’ve got some great news for you.
W: Really? Thank you very much. What’s it about?
M: The Houston Open will be running from April 27 to 30. I’m sure you will be glad to watch the game.
W: Oh, that’s great. But just a moment, let me check. It’s a pity that I can’t make it. I will be on business in China from April 15 to May 15.
M: Well, I’m sorry you have to be away on business then. Let me see. Yes, the US Open. It will be running form June 15 to 18. How about that?
W: That’s great. I will be on my holiday then. It would be wonderful if we could watch the game together.
M: You are right. Let me check the program. Text 10
