I am more than thrilled to receive your email. And I can’t thank you more for your advice on my English study, because of which I have made great progress.
As for your language study, I don’t think you have to be so worried. Actually, Chinese is so flexible that you need to understand the definite meaning of a word or phrase in different situations. Moreover, it is difficult for foreigners to write Chinese characters, especially for beginners. So it is better for you to learn some oral Chinese first and then try writing some simple Chinese characters. Just keep in mind that practice makes perfect.
If possible, please come to China during the summer vacation where you can be exposed to the native Chinese language environment in person. We can also share our experience in language learning with each other.
Yours sincerely, Li Hua
听力录音稿 (Text 1)
M: Barbara, aren’t you supposed to go to Dr. Smith’s lecture today?
W: Oh, I’ve asked one of my friends to take notes for me. So I’m able to help Linda do an experiment. (Text 2)
M: The instructions on the package say that you need to put the folding table together yourself. I’ve spent all afternoon trying in vain to do it.
W: I know what you mean. Last time I tried to put together a toy train for my son, I almost gave up. (Text 3)
W: I can’t go to the dining hall now. I’ll have to go back to the classroom. I left my cell phone on my desk.
M: But I remember having put it into your bag. W: Really? Ah yes, you’re right. (Text 4)
M: Oh, I’m so sorry I forgot to bring along your book. W: Anyway, I won’t need it until Friday night. M: I promise I’ll give it to you this Wednesday. W: Really? Wednesday is April Fool’s Day! (Text 5)
W: I think your article in the school newspaper is great. Your viewpoints have certainly convinced me.
M: Thanks, but reading through the general responses, you and I are obviously in the minority. (Text 6)
M: Good morning, Sue! How is your holiday? Did you enjoy it?
W: Yes, I had a great time. I went to Inner Mongolia with some of my friends. We went mountain climbing near Baotou, and we stayed in a tent at night and cooked meals over an open fire. M: Sounds cool! Did you like the people there?
W: Yes, they were nice. We met some farmers and they invited us to have tea in their house.

M: What an interesting experience! (Text 7)
W: Excuse me. We’re making a survey. Would you like to answer some questions? M: Sure.
W: Well, how much pocket money you get from your parents every month? M: About 50 dollars.
W: Do you get pocket money in other ways?
M: Yes. Most of my friends take part-time jobs to get pocket money. So do I. I look after my neighbor’s baby every Friday evening. They pay me 12 dollars an hour. So I can get 48 dollars from them every week.
W: Then, how do you usually spend your pocket money?
M: Well, I pay my phone bill every month. And sometimes I have to buy books for my study. W: What a nice young man! Thank you for talking with us. (Text 8)
W: Hi Edward! Haven’t seen you for a long time!
M: Cindy! I never imagined meeting you here! It’s been nearly three years since we left St. Matthew’s Primary School, hasn’t it?
W: Yeah. Time flies. How is your middle school life?
M: It’s great! I’m in Stowe Middle School and I’m a member of its theater group. W: Really? The theater group is quite popular. It puts on very great plays and musicals.
M: Thanks. We have to practice very hard for every show. But I like it and it’s also great fun to go to the theater frequently and enjoy plays by famous artists.
W: Wow, that’s great! I’m afraid it’s time for the film. Let’s go inside and enjoy the film first. (Text 9)
M: Lily, where do you like to eat?
W: Well, my favorite restaurant is The Knife and Talk. It’s very near the city center. At lunch it’s full of office workers, but I like to go before that, in the middle of the morning. I go there and order big breakfast and take one of their newspapers and just relax for an hour or so. Their pancakes are delicious. They don’t have a TV in there, which I love most. They just have some jazz music, very quiet, nothing too loud. What’s your favorite restaurant?
M: Well, it’s just a very simple restaurant. There are only about six tables in there. A couple of waitresses wear ugly pink uniforms. But the food is great, very tasty, and cheap too, which is important, of course. There are some truck drivers sitting at the counter drinking coffee and eating sausages every morning. I always have pancakes in the morning and their fish pie for lunch. That restaurant has been open for many years. They say the actor James Dean eats there sometimes, but I don’t think that’s true. (Text 10)
W: Good morning, everyone. This is Helen Green with What to Do Today on the air. It’s quite a warm and sunny Saturday. Now, if you’ve got nothing to do today, why not go to East Mountain in the city and get digging? That’s the message from Sussex Middle School. It is organizing a tree-planting activity in East Mountain.
Sussex Middle School is a member of the organization of Helping Blind Children. It is raising money for poor blind children in Asia by planting trees. A famous computer company agrees to give $30 for each tree to be planted in the city. Sussex Middle School is planning to plant 1,500 trees this weekend. Students and their parents are hoping to plant a half today. They are looking for volunteers to come along and help. Tree-planting experience is not necessary as there will be experts to give directions. Thick gloves will be provided to protect your hands when you are doing the digging. There’re also hats provided. And please do bring basic tools with you to dig holes and water trees. Everyone is welcome to come along anytime from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. this weekend. So it could be really a nice day out for all the families.
This is What to Do Today. Thanks for your listening. Enjoy your day.
