A mother learned an unexpected lesson after she took her young daughter to a skatepark(滑板运动场), and she wrote about the experience titled “Dear teenage boy at the skatepark”.
You’re probably about 15 years old, so I don’t expect you to be 21 to a little girl on your skate ramp(滑道) for that matter.
What you don’t know is that I frequently had to 22 her that skateboarding wasn’t 23 for boys. But when we walked up to the skatepark and saw that it was full of teenage boys who were 24 and swearing(诅咒), she immediately wanted to 25 and go home.
I 26 wanted to go back too because I didn’t want to have to put on a mom’s 27 and exchange words with you. I also didn’t want my daughter to feel like she had to be 28 of anyone. So when she said, “Mom, it’s full of 29 boys,” I calmly said, “ 30 ? They don’t own the skatepark.” She then went down the ramp in spite of you and your friends who were 31 past her.
She only had two or three runs in before you 32 her and said “Hey, excuse me …” I immediately prepared to deliver my “She’s 33 to use this park just as much as you guys” 34 when I heard you say, “Your 35 are wrong. Can I help you?” You spent almost an hour with my daughter showing her how to 36 , and you held her hand and helped her get up when she fell down.

Imagine a picnic dinner held at an undisclosed location only made known hours before the meal begins, where guests are invited to decorate empty tables and chairs, bring their favorite dishes and wear white to reflect the simplicity of the event.
This was the scene at a PopUp dinner held Saturday in Brooklyn, New York’s Prospect Park. PopUp dinners are popping up all over the country — not just in Brooklyn. Garrett Sathre and his wife and business partner, Nicole Benjamin-Sathre are the team behind Hand Made Events and the creators and hosts of the PopUp dinners. Sathre, a former restaurateur and head chef to Bubba’s Diner and Kitchen 39, both located in the Bay Area, came up with the concept of the flash dinner after he was inspired by the annual D?ner en Blanc held in Paris.
In 2011, Hand Made Events used the power of social media to get the word out and soon, enough interest was attracted. In October 2011, it held its first flash dinner, calling the evening Le D?ner à San Francisco at Golden Gate Park’s outdoor Music Pavilion. He described it as a picnic dinner for 3,500 people. “I thought we would have anywhere between 300-500 people to attend. Two articles ran a week later about my crazy idea and we got 15,000 emails in a matter of three days,” Sathre said.
After the success of the San Francisco dinner, Sathre decided to expand his “crazy idea” and hold 英语 第3页 共10页 in Kenya plan her own flash dinner via Skype. “This event crosses and appeals to all cultures. In a world where storing wealth is considered the norm, giving money to complete strangers seems like a unreasonable idea. Yet, for the hundreds who have taken part in Free Money Day since its beginnings in 2011, there is a knowing that greater sharing is needed in this world. More than this, our

experiences on Free Money Day(each September 15) confirm that people feel more comfortable giving, than receiving. In 2014, for example, Jennifer Hinton said it took her and three friends over an hour to give away 35 Euros in Athens, Greece.
It’s true that few are willing to jump straight into the vulnerability of receiving from a stranger. So we encourage Free Money Day participants to use a simple technique: suggest to receivers that they keep half the money you’re giving them, and pass the other half on to someone else. This technique increases people’s willingness to engage in the experiment, and makes people feel a need to view the giving as legitimate(合法的), which in turn legitimizes the receiving.
Perhaps many Free Money Day participants have reported unwillingness to receive partly because we have a cultural connotation that receiving help is linked with weakness. Also it can come, in part, from spine(脊柱) operation.
Doctors have recommended bracing for more than 50 years, but until now, there was limited evidence that bracing and other conservative treatments relieved back pain or improved quality of life in patients.
“When you have teenagers who are anxious about wearing a brace to school or what their friends will think, it gave us a bit of heartache to try to convince them if we weren’t certain ourselves,” said Dr. Paul D. Sponseller at Johns Hopkins Children’s Center, who was not involved in the study. “In light of this new evidence, we can say we really do have a basis for putting them through bracing.”
In the study, researchers led by Dr. Stuart L. Weinstein at the University of Iowa analyzed data on 242 young patients. The children were all aged 10-15 and they all had a spinal curvature(脊柱弯曲) of …__…_○__○…___……___……:…号…考…订___订…___……___……__:……级…○班○…___…_…__…_…__…_…_:…装名装…姓__……___……___……___…○:校○…学…………………外内……………………○○……………………generosity for others, and the caring ethic that the Free Money Day experiment hopes to grow. Also it may come from a deeper belief: that we are not worthy of love and support, especially not from people who we’ve never helped. Additionally, insecure people feel unable to fully receive the riches they’ve been given and yet, when people are supported and loved, they tend to naturally give with generosity.
Thus, what can you do to encourage people to receive more willingly? Perhaps they will feel your heart. And, if so, what a wonderful opportunity for growth because the expression “give and ye shall receive” should actually be reversed: receive, and you shall give. As we become more able to receive love, we’re more able to give in a healthy way.
46. In Paragraph 1, Jennifer Hinton’s finding is mentioned just to show that . A. giving strangers money is a strange idea B. people tend to prefer giving to receiving
C. it’s more necessary for people to learn to share D. more and more people are unwilling to receive 47. According to the text, Free Money Day . A. is intended for homeless people B. takes place in September every year C. is meant to build a more secure society
D. aims to prove people’s unwillingness to receive
48. According to Hinton, when given free money, people would most probably say “ ”. A. It is really nice of you to give me so much help B. Don’t worry and I’ll pass part of it to someone else C. Please give it to someone who needs it more than me D. Thank you, and would you please give me more
49. In the author’s opinion, how can we make one willing to help others? A. By ensuring he feels secure emotionally. B. By increasing his ability to receive help. C. By teaching him healthy ways of giving.
D. By convincing him giving is related to receiving.

A new study provides the best evidence yet that wearing a back brace(背撑) will slow the progression of the most common form of scoliosis(背撑) in adolescents, helping them avoid painful 英语 第5页 共10页 20-40 degrees.
The patients were divided into two groups. One group were used for observation(they did not use bracing) ; the other group were required to wear the brace for at least 18 hours daily
In the analysis that included both groups, the rate of treatment success was 72% among children with bracing, compared with 48% among those under observation. The benefit increased when the participants had longer bracing hours. More than 90% of the children who were successfully treated wore their braces more than 13 hours a day.
When her daughter Maddie was diagnosed with scoliosis at age 10, Becky Houser, of North Liberty, Iowa, wanted to avoid operations “at all costs.” So Maddie, a participant in Weinstein’s study, chose to wear a brace.
“We didn’t want to not do anything,” said Houser, who underwent an operation for scoliosis thirty years ago.
After three years of bracing, Maddie, now 13, was thrilled to learn that her spinal curvature was holding steady at 28 degrees. She no longer needs bracing because she has reached the age when children achieve bone maturity.
“We are extremely relieved,” Houser said.
50. In the past, when Sponseller recommended bracing he . A. tried to improve the treatment B. was unsure about its effectiveness
C. was worried about patients’ life quality D. considered other people’s opinions first
51. Most participants using the brace found . A. it was a successful treatment B. long bracing hours were harmful

Finally, after the stands had emptied, the coach noticed that this young man was sitting quietly in the corner all alone. The coach came to him and said, “Kid, you were fantastic! Tell me what got into you? How did you do it?”
He looked at the coach, with tears in his eyes, and said, “Well, you knew my dad died, but did you know that my dad was blind?” The young man swallowed hard and forced a smile, “Dad came to all my games, but today was the first time he could see me play, and I wanted to show him I could make it!” 55. What’s the writer’s attitude toward the young boy in the passage? A. Appreciative. B. Critical. C. Grateful. ………线…………○………… D
In my mind, there is a moving story about a skinny young boy who loved football with all his heart. Practice after practice, he eagerly gave everything he had. But being half the size of the other boys, he got absolutely nowhere. At all the games, this hopeful athlete sat on the bench and hardly ever played. This teenager lived alone with his father, and the two of them had a very special relationship. Even though the son was always on the bench, his father was always in the stands cheering. He never missed a game. This young man was still the smallest of the class when he entered high school. But his father continued to encourage him.
The young man loved football and was determined to try his best at every practice, and perhaps he’d get to play when he became a senior. All through high school he never missed a practice nor a game but remained a bench-warmer. Besides, his faithful father was always in the stands, always with words of encouragement for him. When the young man went to college, he decided to try out for the football team as a “walk-on”. Everyone was sure he could never make the cut, but he did.
The news that he had survived the cut thrilled him so much that he rushed to the nearest phone and called his father. His father shared his excitement and was sent season tickets for all the college games. This persistent young athlete never missed practice during his four years at college, but he never got to play in a game.
It was at the end of his senior football season that the coach met him with a telegram. The young man read the telegram and he became totally silent. Swallowing hard, he mumbled to the coach, “My father died this morning. Is it all right if I miss practice today?” The coach put his arm gently around his shoulder and said, “Take the rest of the week off, son. And don’t even plan to come back to the game on Saturday.”
Saturday arrived, and the game was not going well. In the third quarter, when the team was ten points behind, a silent young man quietly slipped into the empty locker room and put on his football gear. As he ran onto the sidelines(边线), the coach and his players were surprised to see their faithful teammate back so soon. “Coach, please let me play. I’ve just got to play today,” said the young man. The coach pretended not to hear him. There was no way he wanted his worst player in this close playoff game. But the young man insisted, and finally feeling sorry for the kid, the coach gave in. “All right,” he said. “You can go in.\ Before long, the coach, the players and everyone in the stands could not believe their eyes. This little unknown, who had never played before was doing everything right. The opposing team could not stop him. He ran, he passed, blocked, and tackled like a star. His team began to succeed. The score was soon tied. In the closing seconds of the game, this kid got a pass and ran all the way for the winning touchdown. 英语 第7页 共10页 D. Negative.

He had no idea at all what kind of person he wanted to be in future.
57. Who felt very pleased when the young man was chosen to be a member of his college team? A. His teachers and classmates. B. His coach and teammates. C. His parents and relatives. D. He himself and his father.
58. From the passage, we can infer that _________.
A. the young man’s coach played an important role in his growth B. the young man’s father had a great positive influence on him C. not until his father passed away did the young man train hard D. the young man’s road to success in football was always smooth 59. Why did the young man return to the match on Saturday?
A. He hoped his dead father could be proud of his performance. B. He thought he was much better than other players in his team.
C. He wanted to defeat the opposing team in this significant game. D. He planned to make money to cure his father of his blindness. 60. What’s the best title of the passage? A. A thrilling football match B. Determined father and son C. The power of dreams
