过去分词做状语和定语

1.过去分词作定语The past participle as the attributive 1) 定语的位置

a. 单个过去分词及由过去分词构成的复合形容词作定语时,通常置于被修饰词之前. the developed countries 发达国家 well-trained policemen 训练有素的警察

*注意: leave的过去分词作定语要后置, 即放在被修饰词之后. 如: There is only one minute left. b. 过去分词短语作定语要后置. The cat lost last week has been found. 2) 表示情感的动词的过去分词

由表示情感或心理状态的动词转化而来的过去分词作定语时, 此类过去分词已经完全形容词化, 常见的这类过去分词有:disappointed(失望的 ), moved(感动的), interested(感兴趣的), touched(感动的), surprised(吃惊的)等.

3) 不及物动词的过去也有分词形式, 由于不及物动词不可以直接跟宾语, 所以不及物动词的过去分词作定语时只求表示动作的完成, 而没有被动的意义. 如: newly-arrived goods(新到的货) fallen leaves(落叶) faded flowers(凋谢的花)

4) 过去分词与现在分词作定语时的区别

a. 英语中有很多与感觉有关的及物动词其现在分词表示:令人/使人…的, 其过去分词则表示:(人)觉得…/感到….

比较: moving(令人感动的)/moved(受感动的)

frightening(吓人的)/frightened(受惊吓的) encouraging(令人鼓舞的)/encouraged(受鼓舞的) b. 现在分词多用来指事或物.

a moving story(一个动人的故事) frightening sound(吓人的声音) c. 过去分词多用来指人, 人的声音或表情. His frightened expression made his wife surprised. 他的惊惶的表情使他太太惊讶.

We could hear her excited voice. 当时我们可以听到她很兴奋的声音. 2. 过去分词作状语. The past participle as the adverbial 1) 基本特点

过去分词在句中可以作时间状语, 原因状语, 方式状语, 伴随状语和让步状语, 而且可以与对应的状语从句进行句型转换.

点拨:答案为A. tired of 的意思是 厌倦…, 过去分词在句中作原因状语, 其逻辑主语是Mr. Smith, 现在分词boring的意思是 令人厌烦的, 修饰speech. 2) 连词+过去分词

当状语从句的主语与主句主语一致, 而且状语从句的谓语动词是被动语态形式时, 从句可以转换成连词过去分词的行式, 同时省掉从句的主语和句中的助动词be, 注意该结构中的连词仍保持原来的意义. 可用于本结构引导状语从句的连词常见的有:while/when/as/though/although/unless/if/once等. a. The captain advised the soldier not to say anything unless he was asked. 可以转换成: The captain advised the soldier not to say anything unless asked. b. You should do as you were told to. 可转换成: You should do as told to. 3) 现在分词与过去分词作状语的区别

a. 最主要的区别在于两者与所修饰的主语的主动与被动关系的区别.

*现在分词作状语时, 现在分词的动作就是句子主语的动作, 它们之间的关系是主动关系. He went out shutting the door behind him.

Not knowing what to do, he went to his parents for help.

*过去分词作状语时, 过去分词表示的动作是句子主语承受的动作, 它们之间的关系是被动关系. Given more attention, the trees could have grown better. 如果对这些树多关心一些, 它们本来会长得更好.
