We can focus on the good or on the bad. One leads to happiness and light, while the other leads to

sorrow and depression.

This morning, I was in a neighborhood and someone rudely cut in front of me in the left turn lane (车道).Yes, it was a small thing but I was really put out. In contrast, at noon, my daughter and I were waiting for a table in a crowded coffee shop, where a woman got up to give us her table. In the two common situations, I could be discouraged about humanity (人性)or uplifted. And I realized it’s always a choice.

However, this isn’t as easy as it sounds. For one thing, we often hear our friends and acquaintances (熟人) tell the stories of negativity. For another, the news isn’t foil of heart-warming stories about the goodness of humanity. The media often mentions the negative things and on Facebook somehow even the positive posts are meant to make the rest of us feel bad! Even so, we can try our best to focus on the good and ignore the bad, so that we’11 make a difference.

I remember the advice I gave to a friend’s son. This lovely young man had a rough high school experience. He was forced to leave the school. He was consumed with anger and bitterness. Yet, in the middle of this painful experience, a head teacher from another school thought the young man had potential, and drove an hour to meet with him and offer him a place in his high school.

The student, as he expected, became a famous scientist later. My advice once given to him was that we needn’t focus on the people who were cruel to us, but on the ones who were kind, which helped him a lot.

4. What annoyed the author this morning? A. Driving to work. B. Waiting for a table.

C. Walking with neighbors. D. Seeing a car jump the queue.

5. What does the underlined word “this” in Paragraph 3 refer to? A. To choose to see the bright side of life. B. To struggle to think outside the box. C. To behave ourselves in rush hours. D. To change the behavior of others. 6. What can we infer from Paragraph 3?

A. The modem world pushes us to get more information. B. The Internet allows us to connect with more friends. C. Social media tends to spread much negative news. D. Online friends motivate us to do more good deeds. 7. How did the author’s advice help the young man? A. It made him see his own potential. B. It taught him to fight with wrongdoing. C. It helped him to take a positive attitude.

D. It let him follow his heart rather than his head. C

Given the number of deals and discounts most travel platforms offer these days, you can easily travel abroad without spending too much money. Traveling around the world isn’t just fun and interesting. There’s enough research showing that traveling can be highly beneficial for emotional, mental and physical health as well.

Although losing your baggage or almost missing a connecting flight in a foreign country can make you nervous, traveling has been scientifically proven to dramatically reduce stress. A Cornell University study noted that people are significantly happier while planning a trip that they might not even take. The expectation of taking a vacation contributes to their direct happiness more than something material they own. Therefore,it’s only fair to conclude that the advantages of traveling take effect before the trip does.

Besides, travelers take 3 days off for a vacation feel more relaxed, less worried and in a better mood for weeks after their short trip has ended. The Wisconsin Rural Women’s Health Study also says that women who go on a vacation at least 2 times a year are less likely to suffer from chronic (长期的)stress and depression, as opposed to women who go on a vacation less than once every 2 years. Similarly, a collective study shows that men who do not enjoy a yearly vacation are at a 20% higher sudden death risk and show an increased 30% risk of suffering from heart disease.

While many people think hours of sitting in moving vehicles (交通工具) is tiring, I think traveling provides you with plenty of opportunities to be active and actually makes you healthier. When you travel, you’d want to explore new things and see all that each place has to offer, so you’re more likely to take up an extreme sport, walk the streets, or take a hike, which is much more than what you would generally do at home.

8. What can we know about traveling abroad from Paragraph 1? A. It has scientifically proven advantages. B. It is a preferable way of self-improvement.

C. It is likely to cause cultural shock and prejudices. D. Its popularity depends on the available discounts.

9. What can we know from the Cornell University study? A. The process of trip planning gives people satisfaction. B. The benefits of traveling often disappear after traveling. C. People often lose baggage during long-distance travels.

D. Material rewards are more important to people than traveling. 10. What do the studies mentioned in Paragraph 3 show? A. Women traveling little are often in low spirits.

B. Long-time illness and sadness mainly happen to women. C. Health risks are highly reduced in people fond of traveling. D. More people are suffering from physical illnesses due to stress.

11. What does the author think about the effects of traveling on physical health? A. Negative. B. Positive. C. Unrelated. D. Unclear. D

Maoris came to the islands of New Zealand about a thousand years ago after voyaging thousands of miles from the islands of Polynesia in the Pacific. To the Maoris, New Zealand is the Land of the Long White Cloud. They arc a naturally spiritual community who cherishes the existence of life on earth. They know the wisdom of the standing mountains and the knowledge carried by the forest trees.

Maoris speak a lot about maintaining the sanctity (圣洁)of the human soul. They are faithful to the belief that everyone and everything is connected in this universe. They each have a soul, and it feeds on sympathy and love. All that falls in the universe is part of their family. Everything living

or non-living, in the community of Maori, means something of huge significance.

Maoris greet each other in a traditional way known as Hongi. It is done by pressing one’s nose and forehead (at the same time) to another person whenever they meet. Hongi actually means

“sharing of breath”,and that the other person is no longer considered as a visitor, but part of the community.

As a community, Maoris have respect for all things. They connect themselves to the soul and spirit of the mountains, rivers and lakes. And they consider the earth their mother and the sky their father. They are told not to look down upon a person of small body shape because they may be as strong as the “kahikatoa”,which is a small tree, but strong and tough.

The unusual beauty of Maoris is that their method of connecting to the great spiritual energy isn’t limited to praying or practicing certain religious ceremonies. Instead, they take living life in good conscience (良心) very seriously. They understand that the joy of spiritual living is to connect with the life force, and to respect the life that each one of us is carrying within ourselves. 12. What does the underlined word “cherishes” in Paragraph 1 mean? A. Values. B. Criticizes. C. Discovers. D. Disregards.

13. According to the text, Maoris believe that A. they are all children of the forest

B. they are born with several different souls C. there is nothing non-living in the universe

D. there is a link between all the people and things 14. What does the “kahikatoa” mean to Maoris? A. A reminder of never judging by appearances. B. A symbol of the weak life force. C. A representative of their faith. D. A clear conscience.

15. What does this text mainly tell us? A. Maoris’ birthplace. B. Maoris’ culture. C. Maoris’ long history.

D. Maoris’ religious ceremonies.

第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

A storm room is a stand-alone structure that can be built above ground. 16 Once these storm rooms are built correctly, they are able to withstand a storm with wind speeds of up to two hundred and fifty miles per hour.

Basements are often used for protection from the wind and the forces of dangerous storms like hurricanes. 17 This leaves them with limited choices about where to turn for protection during a storm.

Some people may select a small closet or bathroom to help protect them during a storm. However, the force of the wind that a hurricane can produce would penetrate (穿透) a bathroom or closet. 18 The storm room can be built as a separate structure of the home or it can be built into the basement
