―Has this beautiful, precious ring of yours the power of enchanting(施魔法)people?‖ asked the young man.
―Oh, no!‖ replied Willy, ―They see in this glittering diamond ring something that makes them think I am rich, and, unfortunately, they place wealth above everything else.‖
―What blind people!‖ exclaimed the young man. ―It is not the ring that has drawn them to you but their desire for riches. Is it possible to appreciate more a piece of yellow metal surrounded by little stones than the goodness of my Lord? And indeed how foolish are people who place their trust in riches rather than in virtues!‖

At the Times Square in New York, a white-haired old woman was seen pacing up and down the square day in and day out. Some people took her to be stretching her limbs for want of a better thing to do while others thought she was wandering about without a home to turn to until the story behind it was disclosed in the press. It turned out that she was watching and studying with close intent the pedestrians going to and fro at the square in search of someone who looked worried and was apparently in need of help.
At the sight of a small kid running aimlessly about all on his own, she would come up and say, ―Is it that you can‘t find your way home, my child? Do you need my help?‖ Seeing a dispirited girl, gloomy with worry, she would step up and tenderly ask, ―Baby, is there something upsetting you? Share with me what‘s weighing on your mind. I might be of some help to you.‖ In the case of a heavy-hearted, sad old folk, she would be the first to greet him and say, ―My dear old fellow, what‘s troubling you? Do you need my advice?‖ Among those she has rescued are young men and young women who, having been out of work for too long, were attempting to commit suicide in despair. She also brought to their homes school children who stayed away from their homes as well as mentally-disabled old folks who got lost and couldn‘t find their way home. She rescued kidnapped girls on their first visit to New York and even persuaded desperate criminals to turn themselves in.
A man, once bent on taking his own life in depression, is now a department manager of an international corporation. In recalling what happened on that occasion, the man said, ―At her loving care and concern I couldn‘t help throwing myself into her arms and bursting into tears; she was Mother or Grandmother to me.‖ At her advice and encouragement, he restored confidence in himself.
Following this old woman, many aged New Yorkers organized themselves as voluntary rescuers under the slogan: ―Approach strangers and talk with them!‖ Up till now, more and more retirees have joined this group, whose job is, as that old lady does, to seek someone in need of help among the crowds with eyes that have seen the changes of life. As soon as they found one, they would come up and talk with him.
―Approach strangers and talk with them!‖ Let‘s offer a heart-to-heart talk to those helpless in hope of avoiding some regrets, creating a brighter future and changing a might-have-been outcome. 69. Astronauts aboard the space station celebrated a space first on Wednesday by drinking water that had been recycled from their urine(尿), sweat and water got from air. They said \clicked drinking bags and toasted NASA workers on the ground.
The urine recycling system is needed for astronaut stations on the moon and Mars. It also will save NASA money because it won‘t have to ship up as much water to the station by space shuttles or cargo rockets. Besides, it‘s important as the space station is about to expand from three people living on board to six.
The recycling system had been brought up to the space station last November by space shuttles Endeavour, but it couldn‘t be used until samples were tested back on earth. So when it came time to actually drink up, NASA made a big deal of it. The three-man crew stood holding their drinks and congratulated engineers in two NASA centres that worked on the system.
―This is something that had been the stuff of science fiction,‖ American astronaut Michael Barratt said before taking a small mouthful. ―The taste is worth trying.‖
The new system takes the combined urine of the crew from the toilet, moves it to a big tank, where the water is boiled off, and the vapor(水蒸气) is collected. The rest of the urine is thrown away. Then the water vapor is mixed with water from air, and then it goes through filters (过滤器). When six crew members are aboard it can make about six gallons from urine in about six hours.
―Some people may find the idea of drinking recycled urine distasteful, but it is also done on earth, but with a lot longer time between urine and the tap,‖ said Marybeth Edeen, the space station‘s national lab manager.
The technology NASA developed for this system has already been used for quick water purification after the 2004 Asian tsunami.
73. According to the text, the recycling system is important because ___________. A. it makes traveling to the moon for the average person possible B. with it NASA won‘t need to ship any water up the space station C. it can help meet the need for more water after the crew is expanded D. it protects the environment in space by reducing the amount of waste 74. What‘s the RIGHT time order of the following events? a. The samples of the recycled water were tested on earth.
b. Astronauts celebrated the space first of making water from urine c. The recycling system was brought up to the space station.
d. The technology for the system was used to quickly purify water. A. a, d, c, b B. a, c, b, d C. d, a, c, b D. d, c, a, b 75. What did Edeen say about recycled urine and the recycling system? A. The taste of recycled urine is not as good as that of common water. B. The recycling system has made a science fiction story come true. C. The idea of drinking recycled urine makes astronauts feel unpleasant. D. It takes a longer time on earth to make water from urine than in space.

The January fashion show, called FutureFashion, is an example of how far green design has come. Organized by the New York-based nonprofit Earth Pledge, the show inspired many top designers to work with sustainable fabrics for the first time. Several have since made promises to include organic fabrics in their designs.
The designers who undertake green fashion still face many challenges. Scott Hahn, cofounder with Gregory of Rogan and Loomstate, which uses all-organic cotton, says high-quality sustainable materials can still be tough to fine. ―Most designers with existing labels are finding there aren‘t comparable fabrics that can just replace what you‘re doing and what your customers are used to,‖ he says. For example, organic cotton and non-organic cotton are actually indistinguishable once woven into a dress. But some popular artificial materials, like stretch nylon, still have few eco-friendly replacements.
Those who do make the switch are finding they have more support. Last year the influential trade show Designers & Agents stopped charging its participation fee for young green entrepreneurs(企业家) who attend its two springtime shows in Los Angeles and New York and gave special recognition to designers whose collections are at least 25% sustainable . It now counts more than 50 green designers, up from fewer than a dozen two years ago. This week Wal-Mart is set to announce a major initiative aimed at helping cotton farmers go organic: it will buy transitional(过渡型的) cotton at higher prices , thus helping to expand the supply of a key sustainable material . ―Mainstream is about to occur,‖ says Hahn.
Some analysts are less sure. Among consumers, only 18% are even aware that ecofashion exists, up from 6% four years ago. Natalie Hormilla, a fashion writer, is an example of the unconverted consumer, when asked if she owned any sustainable clothes, she replied: ―Not that I‘m aware of.‖ Like most consumers, she finds little time to shop, and when she does, she‘s on the hunt for ―cute stuff that isn‘t too expensive.‖ By her own admission, green just isn‘t yet on her mind. But –thanks to the combined efforts of designers, retailers and suppliers –one day it will be. 77. What is said about FutureFashion?
A. It inspired many leading designers to start going green. B. It showed that designers using organic fabrics would go far.
C. It served as an example of how fashion shows should be organized.
D. It convinced the public that fashionable clothes should be made to last long.
78. According to Scott Hahn, one big challenge to designers who will go organic is that __________. A. much more time is needed to finish a dress using sustainable materials . B. they have to create new brands for clothes made of organic materials . C. customers have difficulty telling organic from non-organic materials . D. quality organic replacements for synthetics are not readily available .
79. We learn from Paragraph 3 that designers who undertake green fashion __________. A. can attend various trade shows free .
B. are readily recognized by the fashion world C. can buy organic cotton at favorable prices . D. are gaining more and more support .
80. What is Natalie Hormilla‘s attitude toward ecofashion? __________. A. She doesn‘t seem to care about it. B. She is doubtful of its practical value. C. She doesn‘t think it is sustainable D. She is very much opposed to the idea

―HEARTLESS‖— a word you wouldn‘t want to use to describe a person. But having his heart removed was what saved Craig Lewis‘ life—and what made him the first living ―heartless‖ man. The 55-year-old, dying of heart disease, was told he only had 12 hours to live, when Billy Cohn and Bud Frazier, doctors from the Texas Heart Institute, decided to try something new. They removed Lewis‘ heart and replaced it with an artificial one. Less than a week after the operation, Lewis was able to sit and speak.
Lewis kept on living like a normal person, with only one difference—he didn‘t have a heartbeat. The human heart usually pumps blood through our bodies by beating regularly. By contrast, this artificial heart pushes the blood forward with two moving blades (桨叶). If you were to touch Lewis or listen to his chest, you would not feel a heartbeat. If you hooked him up to an EKG (心电图) machine, the line would be flat.
Scientists have been trying to create a working artificial heart for years. Until now, all artificial hearts either broke down or caused blocks and infections (感染).
But after five years of hard work, Dr Cohn and Dr Frazier developed this artificial heart. It is smaller and quieter than other artificial hearts and can last much longer. They tested it on 38 calves and all of them turned out energetic and healthy. Lewis is the first human proof that the machine is a success.
The doctors will have to work more on the device and decide on a final design before it can be widely used. The US Food and Drug Administration will also need to say that the machine is safe. But this artificial heart looks likely to bring a ray of hope to thousands of patients. Passage outline Supporting details ◆ 55-year-old Lewis was on the edge of (82) __________. Is there a ―success personality‖—some winning combination of qualities that leads almost inevitably (必然地) to achievement? If so, exactly what is that secret success formula(公式), and can anyone develop it?
At the Gallop Organization we recently focused in depth on success, inquiring into the attitudes of 1500 distinguished people selected at random from Who‘s Who in America. Our research finds out a number of qualities that occur regularly among top achievers. Here is one of the most important, that is common sense.
