When I found out I was moving to India, it was beyond a nightmare. It was something I couldn’t even imagine. The visions I had of India were only based upon a few summer visits to my grandparents, filled with heat, pollution and dirt. Even though I was only six years old, I know this would be a complete change from my comfortable life in Maryland.

During my first six months in India, my expectations were met almost exactly. I hated my new apartment; I missed my school and friends back in Maryland, and I was sick of all the dirty marketplaces that filled the streets of New Delhi.

After those six months were over I finally realized that I was going to be in India for a while. I knew that I had to start making the most of my new life. It was then that I became completely involved in my school. My school, the American Embassy School, was filled with international students: Europeans, Australians, Chinese, and Americans just like me. But they all welcomed me with open arms. It was amazing to be among such diverse students, who had such incredible experiences to share.

Now, when I look back at my time in India, all I can think about is how fortunate I am to have had such a wonderful experience. My move to India not only allowed me to see a completely different side of the world, but I was also able to establish unbreakable bonds with so many interesting and amazing people. Even now, after quite some years, I am still in contact with my

closest friends from the American Embassy School. I cannot even imagine what I would be like without having lived in India. I would have missed out on meeting so many extraordinary people, and I would be a completely different person today.

“Folk singers are more like poets than singers,” Li Yahe, a music investor, once told China Youth Daily. “Folk songs are more about emotions storytelling,” said Li.

Folk is one of the oldest musical genres. It dates back to ancient times, when people sang about their everyday lives and the society around them.

Folk music saw a revival in the Western world in the 1960s. During social upheaval, many

6

young Westerners turned to the simple rhythms of folk. Pioneers included US singer Bob Dylan, whose songs protested contemporary social issues like the Vietnam War. Singers at that time used traditional folk instruments like the banjo, the upright bass, the mandolin and the piano.

In the late 1970s, folk music was introduced to Taiwan. At last time, folk tunes were based on simple song structures, with pleasant chord progression and pretty lyrics, just like during old times. But they were stripped of all politics and instead focused more on the dreams and sorrow of youth.

This continued to be the case when the folk “wave” rippled over Chinese mainland in the 1990s. Sadly, the trend didn’t last long in China. Folk gave way to pop in the late 1990s, when people started living more fast-paced lives. But that didn’t mean folk music had disappeared from the music world entirely. “The drop in the popularity of folk songs is because the business mode of the music industry is outdated, not because of the music itself,” Song Ke, a music producer, once said.

Recent years have seen folk songs gaining popularity, with the emergence of singers like Li Jian and Song Dongye.

30. When did folk songs gradually become unpopular in China? A. In the 1960s. B. In the 1970s. C. In the 1980s. D. In the 1990s.

31. What is the author’s attitude towards the future of folk songs? A. Optimistic. B. Negative. C. Doubtful. D. Unconcerned.

A basic principle of any library is that you return what you take out. However, at Hampshire College’s library, librarians have been lending out packets of seeds, allowing people to plant them, and checking them back in if-and only if-the borrowers manage to develop strong-growing plants in the meantime. The Hampshire College project is part of a small but growing group of “seed libraries” across the USA. Local centers aim to promote gardening and receive a more grass-roots approach to seed breeding.

The circulating-library model might seem like a strange fit with gardening. When you check out books and DVDs, you are supposed to bring them back so others can use them, but with seeds, there’s a strong chance that nothing will come back at all. And, in a world where fruit and vegetable seeds are available for just a few dollars a packet, free seeds aren’t in immediate need in most places.

But libraries have another goal as well, storing and preserving knowledge. On this front, seed libraries see themselves as an important part of a bigger movement, to bring the issue of global plant diversity down to the community level, where many believe it belongs. The mission of recording and saving seeds has fallen mainly to big seed banks and academic researchers. But Those seeds locked away, not reproducing, waiting for plant scientists or a food emergency to call them into actions. This is why seed libraries occupy an important(if still small) role in that bigger story—they actually bring plants into circulation, town by town, encouraging local variety and even potentially developing new species.

There used to be only a handful of seed banks around the country, but now there ate more than 200. “Though the generation, we are going to get seeds that are more locally adapted to grow in our area,” says Thea Atwood, who runs the Hampshire College’s seed library. 32. At Hampship College’s library, the borrowers can . A. lend out packets of seeds B. check seeds before leaving C. hand in good seeds after growing D. return what they take out

33. Seed libraries can help to . A. give seeds to local gardeners B. record useful information of seeds
