88岁高龄的英国女作家多丽丝·莱辛获得了2007年的诺贝尔文学奖。然而,诺贝尔奖的荣誉并不能让她感到高兴,反而给她带来了很多烦恼。为什么呢?

Nobel Prize-winning author Doris Lessing said winning the Noble Prize in 2007 had been a “bloody disaster”.

The increased media (媒体) interest in her has meant that writing a full novel was next to impossible, she said.

Lessing, 88, also said she would probably be giving up writing novels. Her latest book is the

partly fictional memoir(虚幻小说)entitled Alfred and Emily. Since her Nobel winning she has been constantly in demand, she said. “All I do is to give interviews and spend time being photographed.”

Speaking about her writing, she said: “It has stopped. I don’t have any energy any more.” Lessing is the 11th woman to win the Nobel Prize for literature in its 106-year history. Her best known works include The Golden Notebook and The Diaries of Jane Somers(《萨默斯的日记》).

She also recalled that, in the 1960s, she had been told that the Nobel Academy’s judges did not like her and she would never win. Ill-health prevented her from attending the prize ceremony in Stockholm, Sweden.

Instead the Swedish Ambassador to London, Staffan Carlsson, presented the prize to her in the UK. He told her she was being “crowned with a prize you have long deserved(应得)”.

Lessing was born in Iran and moved to Rhodesia—now Zimbabwe—as a child before settling in England in 1949.

Her first novel The Grass is singing was published the following year. Altogether she has written more than 50 novels, plays and collections of short stories.

52. Why did Lessing say her winning the Nobel Prize was “a bloody disaster”? A. She was too excited to go on writing her novels.

B. Her peaceful life was disturbed by the increased media. C. Many people came to ask her for advice on writing.

D. The Swedish Ambassador often came to present the prize. 53. Lessing didn’t go to Stockholm to get the prize because ____. A. she thought of the prize as a “bloody disaster”

B. too many interviews prevented her from going there C. she didn’t want to accept the prize

D. her poor health stoped her from going there

54. From the passage we know that the Nobel Prize for literature was set up ____.

A. in 1901 B. in 1921 C. in the 60s D. in 1949 55. Lessing was given the Noble Prize because ____.

A. she was an 88-year-old woman B. she was a famous writer C. she did a lot to the literature D. she is the oldest writer in the world

My family and I are really grateful that you showed us around when we visited London last week. We had a really good time.

Without your help, we couldn’t have had such a wonderful trip because none of us had been to London before. We visited the British Museum and other well-known beautiful buildings, and we had the delicious food there. We enjoyed ourselves very much. We hope we will visit London again.

If you are in our city in the coming months, give us a call. We would enjoy having you come for dinner and getting together again.

Yours, Li Hua
