There are over 800 boarding schools (寄宿学校) in the UK with students from home and foreign countries. Boarding schools started hundreds of years ago in the UK. The earliest boarding schools were set up for white, rich boys only. Now boys and girls can go to boarding schools from the age of 7 to 18.
What to Do
In the UK, boarding schools have 3 terms in a school year, with about 13 weeks in each term. Students study and live together. They can’t go outside if their teachers don’t allow them to do that. In some schools, each student has his or her subject plan. Besides the usual classrooms and labs, the boarding schools have lots of other facilities (设施) for their students, including music rooms, boats, swimming pools, cinemas and theatres. Most boarding schools have a “light out” time. When it’s time to go to bed, all the lights in the bedrooms are turned off. There are house-masters to take care of students all the time, especially after school hours.
What to Wear
All the students at boarding schools wear a school uniform. Boys usually a shirt and a tie, and girls wear a white blouse, sometimes also a tie and a skirt. As students get older, the rules become less strict.
_______________ In the UK, boarding schools provide students with many different kinds of delicious food. They can choose to have a full English breakfast or simple bread. They can also choose between a meal with no meat and another meal at lunch and dinner. There is self-service for salad, other side dishes and a dessert. Students can also make themselves something to eat at any time in a kitchen, or drink tea or have a snack between meals.

Do you notice that though students spend the same amount of time in class, some get better grades than others? In some ways, it’s because they are different listeners. When having classes, some of them listen carefully. We call them effective listeners. Some just daydream or talk to others. They are ineffective listeners.
How are some listeners effective? First of all, they don’t care about some poor situations, like an uncomfortable seat or a personal problem. They say “No” to anything that will stop them from understanding and remembering. After leaving a class or meeting, they remember what the speakers said, not the room conditions or the speaker’s accent (口音).
Effective listeners always pay attention to the message itself. They try not to be influenced (被影响) by their own feelings or opinions. They do not decide if the thing is boring, too easy, or too difficult before listening. They like getting the challenge (挑战) of new ideas. To help remember difficult ideas, they write down important words and phrases.
However, ineffective listeners often daydream. They don’t like to hear what they don’t agree with or easily understand. They are often so busy taking notes that they miss the
speaker’s main idea. These listeners leave a speech or a class with a notebook full of words, but the notebook means nothing.
Do you wish to do well in your study? Start to be an effective listener. It may help. 62. What does the underlined word “effective” mean? A. 杰出的 B. 有效率的 C. 机智的 D. 积极的 63. To be an effective listener, you'd better__________
A. pay attention to the message itself B. try to know what happened around you C. look up something about the speaker D. not write down anything 64. Which of the following shows the listeners is effective?
A. Linda was busy writing down each word the speaker said in the meeting.
B. Ben continued paying attention to the teacher while others were making noise C. Eric didn’t listen to the teacher when he found the math problem easy for him. D. Susan stopped listening when she found the speaker was wrong.
65. According to the passage, the writer mainly wants to tell people the ________.
A. listening ways of poor listeners in class B. problems of ineffective listening. C. differences between 2 kinds of listeners. D. ways and good points of effective listening
