Andreea, 18, from Romania, sent a photograph of the view from her window. ―Sorry, this picture is plain and boring,‖ she said. ―No one would like it.‖
At home in New Jersey, US, Coreen Burke, 16, clicked (点击) on the same image (图像) in her inbox. She saw a village with its rooftops and walls painted in bright reds and yellows. A distant chimney was puffing (冒) smoke.
―Isn‘t this amazingly different from my country?‖ she thought to herself.
Burke, a teenager with an interest in computers, saw potential (潜力) in that rural photo. She posted it to her blog, Outside My Window. The blog shows a daily picture of someone‘s window view around the world.
Her idea is simple: We can look through a glass window to the scene on the other side.
―Maybe if we understood the way people from all over the world live,‖ Burke explained, ―we would all get along better than we have been lately.‖
With the click of a mouse, you can see Frederic‘s window in the south of France. It looks out on sailboats in a quiet harbor (港湾). Virginia‘s view in Canada is a winter scene with trees covered in white.
Like most high school students, Burke has yet to travel the world. But she says someday she hopes to see Greece and India.
The first window view she posted was from Switzerland. It was a sunset picture taken by an 18-year-old. Then others came flowing in by e-mail, up to seven a day, from as far away as Kazakhstan and Indonesia.
Contributors (贡献者) are marked on maps on Burke‘s bedroom wall. A blue dot (点) shows their country and a pink dot their city. The most responses (回应) have come from Europe – Estonia, Poland, Italy, Germany and Sweden, to name a few. Burke is hoping that she‘ll soon get a photo from Africa or Antarctica.

A great thing happened once. I was driving home to Maryland from visiting friends in Texas. I was going up the road and all of a sudden my car just would not go. It was a Sunday and cold outside. The only person I could get hold of was an old man with a tow (拖) truck .
The old man was probably around age 75 or older, and he was freezing, too. He was pretty deaf, so to talk with him, I had to scream (大声喊)! But we talked and talked. He talked my ear off, and I talked his off. I told him I had no money to fix anything seriously wrong with the car, so if the news was bad, I would have to junk it and take the bus home.
He towed my car to a small Texas town about an hour‘s drive from the middle of nowhere where I had broken down. ? The next day, the auto (汽车) shop called and said I needed a new engine in my car. My motor had blown up! I asked if I could just leave the car there for them.
They said the old man had told them to put in a new motor and send me on my way. I told them I could not afford to pay. They said that the old man who came out to get me that Sunday owned the auto repair shop and was very rich. He said just to give me a new motor and whatever else I needed and tell me to get the car.
Now, every time I see someone in need I try to do all I can for them. I will never forget this man‘s generosity (慷慨) and care for his fellow human being.
I will follow your example, and I know you are up in heaven watching since I was only 18 at the time and now I‘m 40, but never got to say thanks. ? Who knows, maybe the Internet has reached heaven! (343)
