On Monday, Ted and I rented bicycles for the entire family and went around on paths for about an hour. Our two older daughters had their own bikes with training wheels. However, this was the first time that I was on a bicycle in close to ten years. I used to ride to work every day when Ted and I got married.

I had never been so interested in biking until this Monday. To my surprise, I felt a little scared. At first I wasn’t sure if I would be able to ride a bike. I tried to ride a bicycle and it was the strangest feeling. I couldn’t keep my balance. I couldn’t move the pedals (踏板). I thought that I had forgotten how to ride a bicycle. It was embarrassing (令人尴尬的), especially when two of my daughters were already on their bikes, wondering what was wrong with Mommy.

After a few tries with the help of Ted, I found that I could ride it. It did come back! I found that I could ride a bike at least as well as our young children, and at the moment I didn’t need to go any faster than them anyway. Someone had to stay in the rear and keep an eye on the kids!

Now, I’m looking forward to enjoying years of biking as a family! The kids like it and I like it too! I’m realizing that many things can be like riding a bicycle — if you haven’t done it in a while, once you overcome a little difficulty, you can get back into it again, almost as if you never left.

A. It is important to set a good example for young children. B. Once you learn to ride a bike, you should practice it a lot. C. Riding with your family is kind of fun.

D. Life is like riding a bike — if you keep moving, you will make it.

B

This morning I went to the Catholic (天主教的) school in town, where my daughter Susan and my son David were studying. This morning, Susan joined her second grade class in the taking of their “first communion (圣餐式)”.

The priest (神父) seemed quite satisfied in front of an entire school of children dressed in the same clothes together with their parents or relatives. He began the speech by asking the kids to share a story of a time when they were at their happiest. One child who was eager to please wisely said, “At my first communion.” Wasn’t it surprising how quickly we learned to please others? And of course, there were a few more answers that made us smile. “When it was my birthday!” “When I got my pet dog.” “When my family went to Legoland.”

Then, the priest asked the kids to share a time when they were very sad. He told them that they did not have to share but that if they wanted to, they could. My daughter’s hand shot into the air with such a clear purpose, I thought for sure that she would share the day when her grandmother died. At once, my heart sank.

The priest walked over to my daughter and leaned down. Full of pity and interest, he said, “Yes, dear?”

Susan cleared her voice, took the microphone and said: “The day when my brother was born.”

25. The writer went to the Catholic school in town to ____.

A. attend her children’s first communion B. visit the school priest

C. have her first communion D. pick up her children 26. The priest began his speech by _______. A. telling the kids about his first communion

B. asking the kids to share a story of a time when they were at their happiest C. asking the kids to share a time when they were very sad D. telling the kids to say something to please him 27. Susan put up her hand to _______. A. say something to please the priest B. say something that she thought was very sad C. tell the others about her communion D. tell the others that her grandmother died

28. Which of the following may be the best title for this passage? A. The Priest and I B. How to Please Others C. My First Communion D. The Saddest Day

C

What does “getting along” with your teacher mean? “Getting along” means that both you and your teacher have a way of communicating (沟通) and getting what you need from the relationship. In your teacher’s opinion, he or she wants to make sure that you are paying attention, being polite, and trying your best to learn. In your opinion, you want a teacher who is respectful to you, answers your questions, and tries to help you learn. You can get along and learn without being friends with your teacher, although it’s nice if that happens.

In every school, kids will say that some teachers are mean or strict, but don’t judge (判定) a teacher until you are in his or her class and can see for yourself. A strict teacher may be someone who feels strong about getting his or her job done — teaching you the subject you are supposed to learn. It’s also important to remember that making mistakes is a part of learning. By pointing out your mistakes and helping you correct (改正) them, a teacher is teaching you. Remember, in most cases, your teacher is on your side.

Even if a teacher isn’t your favorite, you can still have a successful relationship, especially if you carry out your responsibilities as a student. Here are some of those responsibilities:

●Attend class ready to learn. Be prepared for class with the right pencils and books.

●Listen carefully when your teacher is talking.

●Do your best, whether it’s classroom work, homework, or a test. 29. The main idea of this passage is about _______.

A. making friends with your teacher B. getting along with your teacher C. learning from your teacher D. understanding your teacher 30. If you get along with your teacher, _______. A. both of you will benefit from the relationship B. your teacher will have to answer your questions C. your teacher will have to be respectful to you D. you will have to try your best to learn

31. What does the underlined sentence in the second paragraph mean? A. The teacher has the responsibility to be strict with students. B. Your teacher is just teaching you to learn the subjects

C. Pointing out your mistakes is also a way for a teacher to teach. D. The teacher is there to help you

32. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT the responsibility of a student?

A. Learning by making mistakes. B. Attending class ready to learn. C. Trying your best to learn.

D. Listening to your teacher carefully.

Energy-saving vehicles (交通工具) were part of the Green Transportation Festival in Washington, D.C. last month. The vehicles shown were designed to reduce America’s dependence on gas and help improve the environment. The festival took place in several American cities.

There were exhibitions of cars, buses and motorized (摩托化的) bicycles at the festivals. Most of them used little gas or another kind of fuel such as electricity (电力), and natural gas. People were also advised to think of simpler ways of getting around, such as walking, biking and using public transportation systems. These methods all helped to reduce the use of gas and other fuels. Many people, including students and carmakers, took part in the festival. The exhibition aimed to show people what their so-called “green” vehicles could do.

Festival organizers say that progress in technology (技术) is making it possible
