We all need to fail a little. In fact, the secret of success, might just be that.

Some measure(判断) success by the size of the car he or she drives, others point to the width(厚度) of their wallet or the number of bathrooms in their house.

The trouble is, by that way of thinking, America becomes the land of numbers and the higher the number, the greater the success.

Baseball’s numbers help us to remember that frequent failure (屡次的失败) can be considered a success. Players who fail to get a hit 7 out of every 10 at-bats are considered All-Stars. But they are really stars because they learn from their mistakes. The lessons of failure are an important part of the curriculum(课程) of success. We learn from them. They push us to do better; they teach us humility(谦恭).

Part of the problem, though, is that we live in a country caring for results. In school it is the A student who gets all the honor even though getting an A doesn’t always measure how much a person really knows.

We look up to heroes such as George Washington or John Glenn. Yet we also should not discount the heroes who labor outside the limelight(聚光灯). Those are the men and women who quietly go about the business of raising family and taking care of their neighbors.

The most admirable are ones who invent their own success. They know how to seize(抓住) the moment and let the chips fall where they may. They know that the best way to measure success is by living each day to the fullest.

True success is giving something back. And you don’t have to have a lot in the wallet(钱包) to get it. There are many people, young and old, who give back by serving in public places.

As my father used to say: “Make sure you leave the world a better place than it was when you entered it. At least clean up after yourself.” 47. Which is true according to the writer?

A. Americans show much interest in numbers. B. Top students know more than other students.

C. George Washington is more successful than other people. D. True success is if he or she serves in public places.

48. The meaning of the word “discount” in Paragraph 7 probably is ____? A. make an introduction to B. pay no attention to C. care the importance of D. think much about 49. The writer tells us in Paragraph 8 ____. A. what the real success is B. what people should do to success C. what is the best way to success D. what people we should respect most 50. The best title of the passage probably is ____. A. Who are True Heroes? B. The Secret of Failure C. Failure And Success D. The Way to Success

There is a beach in Fort Bragg, California, which is known for the colourful sea glass. It was a dump (垃圾场) until the 1960s. Glass Beach saw large cleanup projects in the late 1990s and early 2000s, but the glass from bottles and other things remained, worn smooth over time.

Glass Beach is one of Mendocino County’s most popular tourist attractions, as it’s one of the most plentiful sources (来源) of sea glass in the world. But if you want to see this California treasure, go now, because it will likely be gone before we know it.

“Everybody is taking the glass and collecting it, so there’s not as much as there used to be,” said a clerk at Fort Bragg’s tourist information office.

In fact, even though taking away sea glass from the beach is prohibited (禁止), rangers, who look after California State Parks, see people taking the smooth glass pieces home in Ziploc bags all the time. They try to stop people who fill up metal boxes as large as rubbish bins with sea glass, but there’s only so much they can prevent, they say.

The locals will tell you that the beach used to be covered in a foot of sea glass so smooth that you could walk on it with bare feet, but these days glass is difficult to come by on parts of the beach. Many say their only hope is to spread the word about the beach and they ask people to begin minding the signs that say “glass collecting prohibited.”

For many, the destruction (破坏) of Glass Beach is ironic (讽刺的), as it was the human preference for destruction that created the beach in the first place. Without human waste, the beach would never have been present.

For now, Glass Beach remains — and here’s to hoping we humans can keep it that way. 53. Glass Beach used to be ______. A. a dump

B. a project

C. a tourist attraction

D. a state park

54. What’s the trouble for Glass Beach? A. There are too many visitors at present. B. There is less and less sea glass. C. It has been polluted heavily. D. It is not attractive any more.

55. The writer of the passage may agree that ______.

A. people should be responsible for the destruction of Glass Beach B. people should be prohibited from visiting Glass Beach C. more sea glass should be placed on Glass Beach D. more signs should be put up on Glass Beach

The Vieira family moved to the United States in 1981. At that time, they decided to stop speaking Spanish at home and only communicate in English. This was because they were now living in an English-speaking country.

Now the Vieira children are adults, and they sometimes travel to Spain to visit their family and friends. But they cannot communicate with them. Unfortunately this is common. When people move to new countries, they often leave their own customs and mother language behind. This is a mistake because there are many benefits(益处)of knowing more than one language.

One advantage of speaking more than one language is that you can communicate directly with more people around the world. You do not have to depend on others to talk for you, so you’re more independent. People who know only one language must use others to help them communicate.

Furthermore, speaking a second language also allows people to experience other cultures and customs more effectively(有效地). Local expressions, vocabulary, and even jokes can have a powerful effect on a person’s understanding of another culture. So, knowing more than one language increases your knowledge of other cultures.

Finally, having more multi-language speakers improves relationships between countries. If people from different countries can communicate well, the world can become closer. Countries will then have more respect for each other and better understand each other’s problems.

The benefits of knowing more than one language are clear. In fact, there are no disadvantages. It is very sad that many people don’t try to learn another language. It is even worse when people let themselves forget their mother language and become silenced. 53. The passage begins with the experience of the Vieira family in order to______. A. discuss the need for teaching a new language

B. show the problems of speaking only one language C. describe the advantages of moving to another country D. introduce the passage’s main characters to the readers

54. According to the passage, if you can speak more than one language, you can______. A. find a better job B. make more friends C. better understand history D. communicate more independently

55. The underlined phrase “multi-language speakers” (In Paragraph 5) means “people who know ______.”

A. more than one language B. a new language C. their mother language D. body language 56. What is the passage mainly about?

A. How to learn another language. B. The importance of learning English.

C. The benefits of learning other languages. D. The reasons why people come to America.
