Whether in the home or the workplace, social robots are going to become a lot more common in the next few years.Social robots are about to bring technology to the everyday world in a more humanized way, said Cynthia Breazeal, chief scientist at the robot company Jibo.
While household robots today do the normal housework, social robots will be much more like companions than mere tools. For example, these robots will be able to distinguish when someone is happy or sad. This allows them to respond more appropriately to the user.
The Jibo robot, arranged to ship later this year, is designed to be a personalized assistant. You can talk to the robot, ask it questions, and make requests for it to perform different tasks. The robot doesn't just deliver general answers to questions; it responds based on what it learns about each individual in the household. It can do things such as reminding an elderly family member to take medicine or taking family photos.
Social robots are not just finding their way into the home. They have potential applications in everything from education to health care and are already finding their way into some of these spaces.
Fellow Robots is one company bringing social robots to the market. The company's “Oshbot” robot is built to assist customers in a store, which can help the customers find items and help guide them to the product's location in the store. It can also speak different languages and make recommendations for different items based on what the customer is shopping for.
The more interaction the robot has with humans, the more it learns. But Oshbot, like other social robots, is not intended to replace workers, but to work alongside other employees.“We have technologies to train social robots to do things not for us, but with us,” said Breazeal.

I find it humorous sometimes that even the most ordinary incidents can have an impact on our awareness.
My wife, daughter, and I moved into our home nine years ago and we spent a lot of time and energy in the yard to get it looking like it does today. We live on a corner, higher than street level, and the entire side of the yard is surrounded by a professionally built rock wall. The front of the house though is another story because instead of a wall along the sidewalk, the rocks appear to be just thrown up onto the dirt as if someone were in a hurry to finish.
We did the best we could with what we had to work with and called this area our “rock garden”.Whenever we had leftover flowers or plants, Denise or I would stick them out front, just to bring some color to the area.
Last summer I had reached the end of the rock garden and found a tiny little plant that I could not immediately identify.I knew I didn't plant it and Denise claimed that she didn't either. We decided to let it continue growing until we could figure out what it was.
Weeks passed and as I made my way back to the mystery plant, it appeared to be a Sunflower. It had a tall skinny stalk (茎) and only one head on it.I decided to baby_it_along and weed around it.As I pulled rocks from the area to get to the weeds, I noticed something unusual. The Sunflower had not started where I saw the stalk begin. It actually had begun under a big rock and grown under and around it to reach the sun.
That's when I realized that if a tiny little Sunflower didn't let a big rock stand in its way of developing, we too have the ability to do the same thing. We believe in ourselves like that little Sunflower, we can attain the same food and nutrition as well.
Stand tall like the Sunflower and be proud of who and what you are and the environment will begin to support you.You will find a way to go under or around your big obstacle(障碍) in order to reach your desires.
( )5.We can know from the second paragraph that ________. A.the author finished building his home hurriedly B.it took the author 9 years to make the yard beautiful C.the author's home was made of rock walls
D.the author's family have lived in this home for 9 years ( )6.What does the underlined phrase “baby it along” mean? A.Make shelter for it. B.Leave it alone. C.Take good care of it.
D.Put it elsewhere.
( )7.What can be inferred from this passage? A.Human beings are able to remove obstacles. B.The universal truth made the Sunflower survive. C.A big rock blocked out the sunlight of the Sunflower. D.We can achieve success as long as we are self-confident.
