Because if there’s one thing I’ve learned along the way, it’s that all our personal successes shine a little less brightly if we fail at family. That’s what matters most. When I look back on my life, I won’t be thinking about any particular legislation I passed or policy I promoted. I’ll be thinking about Michelle, and the journey we’ve been on together. I’ll be thinking about Sasha’s dance recitals and Malia’s tennis matches – about the conversations we’ve had and the quiet moments we’ve shared. I’ll be thinking about whether I did right by them, and whether they knew, every day, just how much they were loved.
That’s what I think being a father is all about. And if we can do our best to be a source of comfort and encouragement to our kids; if we can show them unconditional love and help them grow into the people they were meant to be; then we will have succeeded. Happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there, and have a great weekend.
9-4 the New Beginning of an Old Story
Distinguished guests and my fellow citizens, the peaceful transfer of authority is rare in history, yet common in our country. With a simple oath, we affirm old tradition and make new beginnings.
I am honored and humbled to stand here, where so many of America's leaders have come before me, and so many will follow.
We have a place, all of us, in a long story一a story we continue, but whose end we will not see. It is the story of a new world that became a friend and liberator of the old, a story of a slave-holding society that became a servant of freedom, the story of a power that went into the world to protect but not to possess, to defend but not to conquer.
It is the American story一a story of flawed and fallible people, united across the generations
by grand and enduring ideals.
The grandest of these ideals is an unfolding American promise that everyone belongs to, that everyone deserves a chance, that no insignificant person was ever born. Americans are called to enact this promise in our lives and in our laws. And though our nation has sometimes halted, and sometimes delayed, we must follow no other course.
While many of our citizens prosper, others doubt the promise, even the justice, of our own country. The ambitions of some Americans are limited by failing schools and hidden prejudice and the circumstances of their birth. And sometimes our differences run so deep that it seems we share a continent, but not a country.
We do not accept this, and we will not allow it. Our unity, our union, is the serious work of leaders and citizens in every generation.
America,at its best,is a place where personal responsibility is valued and expected. Encouraging responsibility is not a search for scapegoats; it is a call to conscience. And though it requires sacrifice, it brings a deeper fulfillment. We find the fullness of life not only in options, but in commitments. And we find that children and community are the commitments that set us free.
Our public interest depends on private character, on civic duty, family bonds and basic fairness, and on uncounted, unhonored acts of decency which give direction to our freedom.
Sometimes in life we are called to do great things. But as a saint of our times has said, every day we are called to do small things with great love. The most important tasks of a democracy are done by everyone.
What you do is as important as anything government does. I ask you to seek the common good beyond your comfort, to defend needed reforms against easy attacks, to serve your nation beginning with your neighbor. I ask you to be citizens, not subjects, responsible citizens, building communities of service and nation of character.
Americans are generous and strong and decent, not because we believe in ourselves, but we hold beliefs beyond ourselves. When this spirit of citizenship is missing, no government program can replace it. When this spirit is present, no wrong can stand against it.
Never tiring, never yielding, never finishing, we renew that purpose today, to make our country more just and generous, to affirm the dignity of our lives and of every life.
Respected Vice Chancellor Higgins, Faculty and Students,
I am delighted to visit Durham University, the third oldest university in England. I learn that you have become a new member of the Russel Group. I would like to take this opportunity to extend my sincere congratulations to you on your joining this elite group.
Although this is my first visit, Durham University is no stranger to me. Recently I heard an exciting piece of news that Durham University has resumed its Chinese language programmes for undergraduates. I believe this is a very wise decision. This change shows that Durham University is back in tune with global trends. I am convinced that learning Chinese provides great advantages for British students to compete in the world. Chinese language skills will open immense career opportunities as the invigorating China is resuming its role as a leading nation of the world.
China and U.K are at the two ends of the Eurasia continent. Chinese civilization is the world’s only ancient civilization with a continuous history, and the U.K is a pioneer of the world’s modern civilization. In this regard, both China and the U.K have made incredible contributions to human civilization.
Cultural exchange between China and the U.K dates back a long time, but it faces an unbalanced development in two aspects.
First, China’s understanding of the U.K. is far greater than the other way round. There exists what is known as “the deficit of understanding” on the British side. Over the last century, china has been a modest learner---learning from the West. What we have learned includes both theories of Marxism and theories of market economy. Today, Chinese children start English lessons in their first grade of school, some even in their kindergartens. Every year, tens of thousands of Chinese students come to study in the U.K. On the other hand, films, TV series and musicals from the U.K. are immensely popular in China. For example, the Chinese version of Mamma Mia is a blockbuster in China. Downton Abbey is also a great hit among the Chinese. Regrettably, however, the knowledge about China on the part of the large number of the general public in the U.K. stops possibly at marital arts.
Second, there is what is known as “the time discrepancy” in your knowledge about ancient China and modern China, in favour of the former though. Take Durham University as an example. I hear that the departments of history and archeology here rank very high in the U.K. This university also has a long tradition of Chinese studies, and its Oriental Museum has a collection of around 10000 piece of Chinese cultural relics. The U.K. has many experts on Chinese antiquities. In contrast, the number of well-known scholars on contemporary China in quite small. Worse still, in what is supposed to be an objective and rational study and interpretation of contemporary China, some scholars are blinded by what is known as “the psychological barricade”.
I am glad to see that things are improving. Quality cultural products from China have made their frequent appearance in the U.K. Chinese cultural performances have been well received wherever they are staged—at the Edinburgh Arts Festival, in the Royal Albert Hall, in Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, on Trafalgar Square. Moreover, through the concerted efforts of our two countries, more than 20 Confucius institutes and 63 Confucius classrooms have been established and open to the pubic in the U.K., and over 600secondary and elementary schools around the U.K. now offer Chinese language courses.
On top of that, many U.K. universities have scaled up their input on contemporary Chinese studies. For example, more than 30 universities have set up Chinese study centers or Chinese institutes. Contemporary Chinese studies are gaining ever-increasing importance as a “catchy subject” of academic research. Here are some examples. Oxford University has merged all its Chinese studies organizations into a new “China Center”. University of London King’s College
